College on the horizon
I have taken the first concrete step towards my goal of getting my Masters degree. I just sent off for information, application, etc from the London Metropolitan University. While I will also apply to several schools here in the States, this is my first choice.
When I first decided that this had to be my last year at my current job, my first thought was that I would love to go back to England, but it is nearly impossible to get a work visa there (especially coming from my child care background). So I decided to go back to school instead and find a good program in a city that I would enjoy living in. After a little research I came up with a number of options, any of which seemed promising. Then, this past weekend I did a little more searching, making sure I had covered all the bases, as it were. That's when I came across CIS.
CIS (Center for International Studies) is a free service which is affiliated with a number of schools in England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. I would be happy to go to any of these places, but LMU, it turns out, is the only school on the list that has a Masters program comparable to an American MLS or MLIS.
Well, I immediately stopped everything and began exploring this wonderful new option. The program looks good, the school looks good, I can still get student loans, and the program is almost certainly less costly than anything I might end up with here. All good. So, this evening I sent a request off to CIS for the application and information packet. I hope to hear from them before too long.
The only downside is that I have to wait until the fall of 2005 before I can go (if I get accepted and can work out the financial aspects of it). I have to just keep reminding myself that it's not that far away. I'm going on vacation next week and when I get back, summer will be almost over. From there it is a short hop to winter holidays and then spring is right around the corner. Once spring is here, the year is almost over. Doesn't seem so bad when I look at it like that...lol. *vbg*
I have to also remind myself that I cannot put all my hopes on this. I have to apply to the other schools on my list and if I don't get in to LMU I will have to be happy going wherever else I end up. I'm only crossing that bridge if I don't have any other choice, however.
