Lost!

Phew! Well, whatever was ailing Lost the last two weeks, it was all better tonight! And for once, I was home to watch it, rather than relying on the VCR (I still taped it, of course) and have nothing better to do than get my thoughts down while they are still fresh. I'll probably have other thoughts in a day or two, after things percolate a bit, but this is what is percolating right now.

First, Michael and Walt. Man, do I feel sorry for that little boy. I also feel a lot more sympathy for Michael than I have at any point up til now. I'm kind of hating Walt's mom at this point. Moving out of the country and taking the child with her was such a cold, selfish thing to do. And making Brian adopt Walt when the man told her he didn't want kids, and she knew that Michael actively wanted to be the boy's father just makes no sense.

Poor Walt, being raised by a woman who was so selfish and a man who didn't want kids. I'm very intriqued by this hint of 'differentness' we saw in Walt this week. When Michael reacted to Locke saying Walt was different, I thought he was just getting upset because Locke said he hadn't been around when Walt was growing up. Then we see the scene with Walt getting angry that no one is paying attention to him, and the bird flies into the window. And then, just in case someone hasn't caught on yet, Brian claims that there is something -- different -- about Walt, something that makes Brian distinctly uneasy.

And let me just rant about Brian for a minute. Okay, I understand he didn't want to have kids and he didn't want the responsibility of raising Walt, after his wife died. But still, come on. He doesn't even wait until after the funeral. Shows up at Walt's apartment the day after she dies! The least he could do is show a little sensitivity to the poor boy and give him a bit of time to get over the loss of his mom before sending him off with a complete stranger.

I loved learning that Vincent was Brian's dog and Michael made the decision to take the dog with them because he could tell that Walt had a bond with the animal (among other reasons -- it's a nice little slap in the face for Brian, after all). I'm so glad that Michael gave Walt the box with all his cards and letters in it. It's really important for Walt to realize that Michael hadn't just abandoned him as a baby, that his dad has loved him and thought about him all this time. Their relationship still has a ways to go, but I think it might be possible for them to start working on it, now.

I was loving this episode when it was just Michael's story. It got better when they showed Walt's flashback. Then there was the polar bear. The polar bear is awesome, man. I want to know more. More about Walt's differentness and what it has to do with Vincent (is it just me, or did it seem like Walt was 'talking' with Vincent in that flashback scene, where he's just staring into space and so is Vincent?) and the polar bear and the bird that flew into the window. Just one more little ratcheting up of the strangeness going on, on this island.

And then we get our five minutes of Charlie. And oh, man, was it ever a good five minutes! I'm still laughing about it now. Little blue blank book -- $15. Ball point pen -- $2. Charlie trying not to read Claire's diary -- priceless. The almost painful contortions he goes through while trying to restrain himself, finally zipping the book in one bag, burying it under another and stomping off. Only to see him a little later on, sitting quite cozily in front of the fire, happily reading it without a trace of guilt. And then he reads that entry where she says she realizes she likes him and when he's around she feels safe. Awww! How sweet.

And then that ending. And now we have to wait three weeks to see what happens next. Three weeks! Why do they do this to us? But *sigh* it was a good episode and for that I'm very thankful. After coming back from that last break with two iffy episodes, I was beginning to worry.

I totally agree with all of the above....I was REALLY hoping tonight would redeem the show compared to it's previous two eps, and it totally DID.

I was happy to be given such a lovely Charlie moment, but even without that I would have been really happy with this episode. They got back to the mystery of everything and that seems to be the ticket for them.

I have to agree with both of you. Tonight's ep more than made up for the last two, and got me revved up for February Sweeps, when they'll probably come fast and furious. I haven't been this juiced up about a series since Farscape. And Charlie is simply the most adorable thing I've seen since - well, MERRY AND PIPPIN! Oh, he tried so, so hard not to look! What was that he said to Sawyer? "You punch (or hit?) like a pounce"? Was that it? And if so, what the hell is a pounce? Gotta be a British term. Anybody?

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2005-01-19 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe the term Charlie used was 'ponce' as in "you poncy git" -- sort of like saying he hits like a girl, or calling him a fairy. At least, that was my take on it.

And yeah, I think the last show that got me going so much was Farscape. Speaking of which, I really have to finish rewriting part two of Moment of Truth. Hmmm....I wonder if you'd be interested in doing some Farscape betaing somewhere along the line? I really want to get MoT into decent posting shape some day.

Thank you for clearing that up. I loved the look of utter contempt he threw Sawyer's way when he said it, too. I felt a littly bunny nip at me during that scene. Who knows how long I'll be able to fight him off?

Am *so* bummed. I just checked my tape and, though I swear it said "REC" last night while the show was on, nothing taped. I really, really, really hope they repeat that ep the Saturday before the new eps so I can get it back. Dang, and I did SO want to rewatch Charlie's struggle not to look! Was that not the cutest thing you've ever seen? I have become obsessed with his hands (his feet, too, if they were as visible as his hands, but I've seen them in pics and they are just as gorgeous). He has lovely, long lines to his body, don't you think? And get your mind out of the gutter, woman, I'm talking about his long, elegant hands, fingers. He's very nicely put together. And the beard *so* does it for me! He's very close to being criminally sexy. *sigh*

As for the FS fic, sure, why not? I'd love to see John and Aeryn again. :-)

I hate it when I do that. After reading your comment I had to go back and make sure mine had worked. Phew, it did. Had to rewatch that ending. Poor Claire, she looks a total wreck, understandably.

I have to say, I've been obsessed with those hands for a very long time. There was a poll on LOST-TV that I saw probably back in Sept, that asked what it was for you, the hair, the eyes, the hands, the feet or something else, can't remember what. Of course I said the hands. So did something like seventy-five percent of the respondents, lol. What caught me tonight was the way he twirls his hair while he reads. I love that. So totally love that.

Alright, now I have to pull myself back into the real world and go to work. *sigh*

Oh, he *did* twirl, didn't he? Oh, how absolutely, utterly precious! I can just imagine his long, lovely toes curling while he read, too! :-)

Work sucks, no? I have to make my trek, too. But TOMORROW: VACATION, OUT OF TOWN, FANTASY CON!!!!! So excited! It's a small con (Chattanooga), but only a couple hours' drive away and I plan to pop in the Fellowship score when I hit the road and before I can finish King I'll be there! I plan to do some falcon watching, which is a passion of mine. The pair of peregrine falcons at Chickamauga Dam are already displaying courtship behavior and I can't wait to set up and just watch and learn. And then I'm going to hang with fantasy writers all weekend. Larry Niven is Writer GoH, David Cherry Artist GoH. It's always a fun weekend, close to home and while not as glitzy as DragonCon, much less stressful, much more laid back. I look forward to it every year. :-)

Okay, I'm all caught up and I absolutely know what you and <lj user="rabbitchild" were talking about last night. It was indeed a very good episode and gave a lot more insight into the relationship between Michael and Walt. Up until that episode, I assumed that Michael was divorced, but still kept in contact with Walt despite his ex-wife relocating them to Australia. I chalked up the awkward father/son moments to them not having spent any real time together. Finding out that they were complete strangers and they've really only known each other for maybe a month blew me away. Did you notice, when Michael threw the comic book into the fire, the page that Walt was reading actually had a big polar bear on it? Does he make things appear? In the flashback, he was reading the book on birds and then a bird flies into the glass door. He was reading a comic book with a polar bear in it and then a polar bear appears. Freaky.

I see you've found my "Spoilery Lost Thoughts," lol.

I did notice the comic book. This is the second time we've seen that page with the polar bear. The first time might actually have been the episode where Sawyer shoots the other polar bear, but I'd have to go back and double check. I'm definitely curious about Walt and his differentness. I think him 'making things appear' is too obviously fantastigorical (yes, I can make up words when I choose to do so) for the show, but I think there is going to be some connection. I can't wait to find out more.
