Lost Thoughts

Another very good episode of Lost last night.

First things first. When Jin went to the Korean guy's house to deliver his father-in-law's message, did anyone else see Hurley on the TV program the little girl was watching? It was just a little flash but it had to be him. There were several really good Hurley moments this week. I was particularly impressed with his effort to help Jin relax by offering to take him fishing, and you could see that Jin was torn. But I loved that last scene, when the batteries in Hurley's CD player finally died. I have to admit, my first thought when he walked across the screen wearing his headphones was, 'Holy shit, how have his batteries not died yet?' and then they did. Poor Hurley looked like he was going to crumble. I think the music has been proving a solace to him that he sorely needs and now it's gone. I think next week is going to be Hurley's episode and I'm very eager to learn more about his past and where they are going to take his character now.

I was a bit disappointed in the raft burning 'mystery'. The writers were a bit heavy handed, I thought, and I was convinced from the first that it was Walt that had burned it, which made it painful to see Jin being made the scapegoat for some pretty flimsy reasons.

That first conversation between Michael and Walt about the buildings of New York City was an amusing look at a father and son who have very little ability to communicate. Poor Walt clearly doesn't have any interest whatsoever in 'buildings' and the plea to go play ball with Vincent was a blatant attempt to flee. Malcolm David Kelley (Walt) has a very expressive face and when the camera looked at him after showing us the burning raft, it was all written there for everyone to see. And then they tried to make us think Jin had done it by showing that he had burns on his arms. It just seemed too obvious that he must have been trying to put the fire out and I really felt for him when even Sun jumped to assume he was guilty.

We learned a lot about Jin's character this week. Yet another tortured soul on this island chock full of tortured souls. It was too sad to learn that he, too, wanted to escape to America and start over with a new life for him and Sun. But he's so stubborn. He is feeling betrayed by Sun and so even though they both still love each other, he won't accept her plea that they start over and try again. I think there is still hope for them however, once things cool down. One or the other will be endangered somehow and the other will come running, or Sun will have to translate something for Jin and it will start them talking again, or something. (I know, I'm a romantic optimist, but I can't help it, I hope they'll get back together eventually.)

The previews for next week look really good! But then after that we have a six week hiatus. That is going to be painful. :(

We do need more Hurley moments, don't we? The bit with the TV was such a teaser, like Sawyer in the police station when Boone was there.
I don't know if Sun and Jin will get back together or not. This show is pretty unpredictable.
"Six week hiatus". Hmmph.
What happened to the old days, when a new show came on in September, and except for Christmas week, you could count on a new show every week until April? old fogey mode on:*grumblemumblemumble*stoopidtvpeople* old fogey mode off.

I'm with you.

There are shows I used to attempt to watch but they were so unpredictable as to schedule I gave up. Good way to get a decent show cancelled, but perhaps the scheduling people aren't thinking about that... or perhaps they are...

Do you know, when my sister and I were very young we made up this stupid game: we'd hum a snatch of a TV theme, and the other had to guess what day of the week it was. ("My Favorite Martian"--must be Sunday. "Beverly Hillbillies"--Wednesday. etc.)

That would *never* work nowadays. How sad.

I hate it when a good show gets shuffled around. It's bad enough if they change the night or time for the start of a new season, but it's just impossible when it happens almost week to week, which has been the case with some shows.

The other thing that really ruins all chances for a good show is presenting the episodes of a new series out of order. Trying to get to know new characters and settings when carefully plotted out arcs are thrown into disarray is very difficult.

I really am frustrated by all the breaks in airing new episodes, but it does mean the show runs longer into the spring, which I don't mind. Other than the midseason breaks, ABC has been treating the show well, not changing the night or time that it airs, which makes it so much easier to develop a following. :)

I was a bit disappointed in the raft burning 'mystery'.

I agree. I thought it was Walt from the start. Like you said, Malcolm David Kelley has such an expressive face. I think he's a great young actor.

And that bit with Hurley on tv cracked me up. I absolutely can't wait to see his episode :)

I need to get me a Hurley icon. He's too cool. :)

I totally did not see that. I'm going to watch it again tonight and look for it.

I agree about the somewhat lackluster "mystery" of the burning boat; while I did not think about Walt, I felt revealing him as the culprit was kind of anti-climatic. There was just no shock value.

I think Sun and Jin's backstory is probably one of the best developed and so far. While not quite as tragic as others', it is very sad to see how they started and where they ended up.

It's a tiny little clip, barely long enough to realize what you've seen. I had to go back and see it again to be sure I wasn't making it up.

I figured it had to be Walt, but I liked Locke's diversionary tactics, placing the blame on the 'others' to take the pressure off Jin and protect Walt. I never even gave those mysterious others a thought until he mentioned them. I gave it one quick going over and discarded his thoughts as being oddly paranoid for him, returning to Walt as my main suspect. I was happy to find out Locke hadn't gone totally nutso after all.

Thanks for the recap. I missed last night. I'm not as drawn to the show as I was--I hate the feeling of being manipulated and so have been avoiding "Lost" on and off the last couple of months.

I think there are a lot of people who feel the same way. I'm just enjoying the slow build-up of details that show the connections between all these people, like Hurley being on the Korean kid's tv, or Sawyer showing up in the police station while Boone is there. I'm also madly curious about the mysteries surrounding the island. However, I think it's good to give us tiny bits at a time, because it keeps the show interesting, longer.

I also think Jin understands English. Maybe he can't speak it, but I think he definitely understands. I noticed when Sawyer dragged him out of the jungle to the beach and everyone was yelling and arguing, they focused on Jin, specifically his ear once or twice. You heard everyone's voices in English, but then the voices slowly became Asian.

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2005-02-24 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You see, I interpreted that totally differently. I looked on the argument turning into asian babble as a way to put us inside Jin's head; all of a sudden the noise we hear is just so much random sound. To him, the English sounded as much like nonsense as the Korean does to us.

I did see Hurley on the TV - a cute little teaser. Can it be possible he was wearing the exact same shirt that he's worn ever since he got to the island?! It made me so sad to realize that the puppy he gave Sun came to him in such a fashion. I agree that Jin probably understands English - when Sun was trying to persuade him not to leave, she called out to him in English and he turned around as if he understood. He may not speak it very well, however. I'll be honest with you - I'm not real satisfied with the way his character has been explained. I know that it's very easy for couples to fall away from talking to each other, so I can buy that part of it. But how did he go from how he was before they were married (he certainly didn't seem to object to skin-baring clothes in her flashbacks) to the point where he doesn't even want her to open her top button? Come on! Even in Korea, it's not the 19th century anymore. But on the whole, it was a very good episode, and I'm looking forward to next week. I loved the ending where Sun let her wrap fly away and waded into the ocean.

That doesn't really surprise me so much. It's a jealousy thing. He didn't mind before they were married because she wasn't 'his'. But now that they are married and she is 'his,' he doesn't want any other man looking at her, so she has to stay covered up. It probably also has to do with propriety. A young, single girl can behave in a way that would not be considered appropriate for a married woman.

I hope Sun and Jin get bak together too. It was so sad when Jin told Sun it was too late.
I'm looking forward to next week.

That really was a kind of heartbreaking moment, and yet, Sun looked so much happier when she was out on the beach, later, in her bikini, wading into the water, knowing Jin wasn't going to come along and shout at her. I think a time of separation will be good for them, but I hope they are able to find their way back to each other in the end (or the middle, or somewhere, lol).
