auntiemeesh: (fifth doctor)

One armed bandit

Ice skating tonight. This is probably about the fifth time in the past decade that I've actually made it out skating, and I only managed it because [livejournal.com profile] eve11 found a good indoor rink on Neville Island.

My usual skating style is to stand on the skates and wiggle my feet back and forth a little to propel me forward. It's neither efficient nor comfortable, but it allowed me to move around the rink. Tonight, Eve challenged me to actually skate properly. After overcoming my initial reaction of 'hell no, that shit is gonna make me fall down and get hurt,' I got over my sad self and gave it a shot. And spun around in a circle. No lie. Oh well, I persevered and by a half hour in I was starting to feel pretty good. Or, well, at least I was moving about as fast as before, and my legs and ankles weren't hurting at all (normally I last a couple laps before needing a break). Sadly, my early prediction that things would in pain was all too prescient. The problem with skating properly is that the skates leave the surface of the ice occassionly. I got caught up on my toepick, twice. The second time I landed really badly on my shoulder. The good news is it's neither broken nor dislocated. The bad news is, I can only sorta move it. Work is gonna be a bitch tomorrow.* My knee is a little sore, and I'm gonna have a nice bruise on the back of my thigh as well, but I didn't even notice those sore spots until after the advil kicked in and the arm stopped hurting so much, lol.

In other news, I watched Doctor Who: The Mawdryn Undead last night. Fifth Doctor, and it's the first episode that I really remember actual details of from my first viewing as a child. It makes the episode special for nostalgic reasons alone. I liked the episode for the plot as well, though. A fun timey-wimey episode. Plus, it introduces Turlough, and it has the Black Guardian, who wears a delightfully weird raven-topped headpiece.

*Before you all jump on me, I will go to the doctor if it's really bad tomorrow, but I don't expect it to be a problem.

Don't be picking up any kids at work today. They will have to use stepstools or something, I don't know. Let me know about going to see a doctor if you need it-- least I can do is give you a ride there and back :(

I may take you up on that. There's a MedExpress place on Baum Blvd that is open until 9pm. I was going to try to duck out during work, but if you were able to give me a ride afterwards, that would be better, because we're (of course) short-staffed today. :(

No problem, I'll pick you up at 6. Let me know (email or voicemail) if you have to let out early and I can come get you.

Thanks. I should be fine until six. I'm okay as long as I keep my hand in my jacket pocket all the time. It's just moving my arm that's a pain (ha ha). I can type with both hands just fine, but getting my hand up to the keyboard is another proposition, lol.

Good for you--getting out, trying something challenging. Hope the Advil kicks in today and you're not in pain.
=D

It was a bit of a rough night - a few hours good sleep here and there mixed in with periods of great discomfort when the advil wore off, but as long as I don't try to move the arm at all, and keep well adviled up, I'm okay. :)

Ow, that sounds like a painful experience! I've never been on ice skates.

In theory, I try to go skating at least once a year, but in reality, this is probably about the fifth or sixth time in a decade that I've made it onto the ice. It's really a lot of fun, despite this current unfortunate business.

*applauds you for trying*

I've always envied those who can ice skate, properly or improperly. I used to roller skate, but I haven't done even that since my late teens.

I hope the pain eases off for you today!

Thanks. I plan on staying well adviled up today and hope that keeps things manageable.

Not jumping on you, but ...

I hope both the shoulder and the knee are feeling much better this morning!

The knee is just an occasional twinge. The shoulder, not so good. If I let my arm hang straight down, I can extend it all the way. Otherwise, it really hurts just to straighten it. And I have pretty limited ability to raise my hand up in front, or rotate the arm around the shoulder. I've decided to suck it up and go see someone at some point today. There's an urgent care type place on Baum Blvd that has a flat $115 rate for anything they can do in house, and they have x-rays and everything, so it shouldn't be more than that unless there's something really, really wrong (which seems unlikely since there's no swelling and I do have at least some range of motion).

Well I am relieved that you are going to see someone about the shoulder! *Sends healing thoughts and mother hen clucks*
