So, there's been a change of costuming plans. I'm putting my fem Fifth Doctor on the shelf for the time being and focusing on a new challenge. I've got a Kwik Sew coverall pattern on order from Amazon (men's shapeless coveralls - it's going to be interesting to see how I can adapt this just to fit my height/weight proportions, let alone adapt it to have the look I want) and about six yards of muslin on order from Joann's. Time to get to work mocking up a usable pattern. Note to self: I probably also need to buy a bunch of tracing paper. Oh, and I also ordered a sample of a clothing grade vinyl that might do for the fabric. I'm not feeling a hundred percent confident that I'll ever see that though, since I never got an email confirmation of my order. I did write down the order conf. number, so I'll have to give them a call tomorrow and make sure nothing went wrong with my request - I probably just entered my email wrong, but you never know.

Things I learned this weekend:

* Simplicity costume patterns are very strong on fantasy and period outfits, not so much on scifi.

* Finding patterns for coveralls in general is difficult. Finding patterns for women's coveralls is nearly impossible. And the one place I did find a women's pattern, didn't have online purchasing. I'd have to leave a message on their answering machine with all my info. Yeah, I don't feel real comfy with that.

* Some people's ideas of practicality amaze me. I came across a thread on a sewing forum, with a woman asking for a coverall pattern. Another woman chimed in with her desire to take such a pattern and make herself a coverall for when she did her barn chores. Seems perfectly reasonable until she said she wanted to make it in silk organza. I'm guessing denim and other such fabrics would be far too rough on her milky white, buttery soft skin. And I'm also guessing that when she says doing barn chores, she means supervising someone else doing barn chores.

Silk organza for "barn chores"?!?!?! Holy cow!

So what character do you need the coveralls for? And you might find a female coverall pattern (used) online or in a thrift store, because they were popular in the seventies. I recall having one I bought off the rack, but did not wear much as it was too short in the crotch. But I do remember seeing them in the pattern catalogs back then.

A group of us are going to attempt the Gangers.

I'll have to make a couple of trips to thrift stores and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the tip. :)

Mom made me a pair of bib overalls my first year at Grinnell - you could ask if she still has the pattern from that. They were in size pencil, of course, but you seem to be pretty good at adjusting sizes.

Ah, there's the snag, and why it's so hard to find a pattern. Bib overalls are easy to find. Coveralls (zip-fronted with sleeves, like a mechanic or pilot would wear) are harder to come by.

ROTFL
Coveralls in silk organza for doing barn chores! Maybe she's talking about Farmville chores?

I was going to suggest going to a uniform store website to look for coveralls. You might even be able to get some with Fifth Doctor embroidered on the pocket!

I did look at getting store-bought coveralls, but none of them are remotely what I want/need for the costume at hand. I'm pretty sure it would actually be harder to adapt an already made coverall than to just take a basic pattern and redesign it. We'll see, though, if I'm actually able to do that, lol.

I saw "silk" and boggled a bit, but thought, "Well, silk is pretty tough, if you got it in a good sturdy weave it could be a fairly practical, if stupidly expensive, material." Then I read "organza" and lost it. :) One has to wonder if it's some weird and hitherto-unknown fetish.

Maybe she wants to be able to go straight from the barn to an evening wedding.

Ah yes, silk organza coveralls for barn chores. And exactly what planet did this post come from?

I hope you find a pattern and material that work for whoever the Gangers are. Any pics?

The Gangers are from Doctor Who.

Thanks for the picture! I figured they were from Doctor Who, but I'm just a curious kind of person who always wants to know more about the truly important things in life.

Try Kwik Sew 3389. It has all sizes in one patter. It runs from a chest size 34 to 52.

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2011-05-31 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
That's the one I've got on order. :)

Ha HA HA Silk organza coveralls for anything seems oxmoronic to me.
Maybe you could take a pattern for a pair of pants and a pattern for a shirt and combine them.
We sell KwikSew patterns but we don't keep alot in stock. We order them as people want something but they come in a day or two usually. Let me know if I can help with that part. We have a catalog in the store.
Still laughing about the silk coveralls.

I'm going to try the coveralls pattern first, because I think that will be easier.

Seems like lots of designers have been trying desperately to bring back jumpsuits as fashionable, I'm a bit surprised there aren't more patterns.

'Gangers costumes! Awesome. Are you going for the melted wax flesh look?

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
There are a few jumpsuit patterns out there, but they're mostly flowy, halter top things. Or cat suits.

We're looking into the feasibility of doing the full-on faces. It would be very cool to be able to do them, if we can find the time to work out how, make the molds, etc.
