I may need the Winchesters if this keeps up

I don't have air conditioning in my apartment, but I have a pretty good window fan, which keeps me nice and cool most of the summer, except for the very hottest, heaviest nights. I had it on last night, and promptly fell into a nice, deep sleep.

At three-thirty, the fan started cycling through its various power settings and then turned itself off. Each time it changes settings it makes a beep, and those beeps woke me up. I thought Mal might have stood up against the window and accidentally turned it off, since he's done that before, but nope, he was snuggled up on the bed.

I turned the light on and turned the fan back on. It ran for a minute and then did the same thing, cycled through its settings and then turned off. Neither of the cats were anywhere near either the fan or the remote. I turned it on again, went to the bathroom and it was still running when I came back out, so I turned off the light and went back to bed. But I made the mistake of whimsically thinking about ghosts and promptly freaked myself right out.

For whatever reason, the very idea of ghosts in reality just makes me very uncomfortable - it doesn't matter if they're angry, mischevious or completely benign, the idea just freaks me out. So it took a little while to get back to sleep.

The fan behaved the rest of the night, but I'm wondering what sort of electrical problem could have caused that. The red light is showing on my Wii, which makes me wonder if there were some split second power outages or something.

The very short power outages could be an explanation. We seem to have them on a regular basis in Oxford.

Hope the fan keeps functioning through the summer and that you don't have any close encounters with any creepy ectoplasmic things!

I've had a couple power outages already this summer. They seem to be micro outages, but usually last long enough to reset my alarm clock, although not the stove and coffee pot clocks in the kitchen, oddly enough. Either that or there really is a ghost in my apartment who is suddenly interested in playing with my electronics after two years of quiet uninterest.

I would go with the power outage explanation. Many appliances are now made so that the keep going through mini outages which would explain why some do and some don't show the effects. I refuse to even consider the ghost explanation.

The fan ran perfectly well all last night, so hopefully whatever caused the problem doesn't return.
