Cute kids and lovely fall weather

I've got a pretty darn cute group of kids this year. Can't understand a word most of them say, but they are adorable in their mushy-mouthed ways.

The other day, pretty randomly while I was changing one kid's diaper: "Wah oo say a cah?" (What do you say to your cat? It took me a lot of guesses to get there, let me tell you.) We ended up having a whole conversation about how we talk to our pets.

One little boy, who came to us in June with very few words (he was, at the time, the youngest of three boys, and I'm pretty sure the brothers give him what he wants without waiting for words). He's picked up a lot and is starting to use some sentences, but I'm not sure he's discovered consonants yet. I really, really struggle to understand him when he talks (he'll probably be referred for speech support when we do our speech and hearing screening later this year). Today he was playing with a magnet toy that lets children drag small shapes into larger shapes. I pointed out a triangle piece painted like a watermelon and asked him what shape it was. He looked at it, looked at me, moved his mouth around a good bit and finally spit out "awaholhlmelon." He was super proud of himself for getting such an enormous word out.

Another little guy (it seems to be the boys this year that I cannot understand) has such a great personality and loves to tell stories but again, he doesn't know how to enunciate at all, and all of his words are strung together in a low-voiced mumble. He was off for the summer so I've only known him a month and I'm still slowly learning how to interpret what he's saying but when I do get it right he gives me the best grin ever.

I wish I was better at remembering things. This group of kids make me smile and laugh every day with the silly/happy things they do and I would love to share more, but by the time I get home, it's all gone.

I saw not one but three rainbows this afternoon. About 5:40, only a couple kids left at work, all of them eagerly awaiting parents, one little boy comes running over, "Meesh, Meesh, a rainbow!" We went to the window together and saw a great one, full span, really bold. Another little boy was getting ready to go home and I invited him to come over and look at it while his mom was getting his things. At first I wasn't sure he could see it (we've got some concerns about his focus/vision) but then he turned to me and said, "So many colors!" His mom, on the other hand, acted like rainbows were not in the least beautiful or exciting things to see. Just wanted to get home, I guess. Then, at 6, right as I was walking out the door, another one popped up in the sky but faded quickly while I tried to make my phone camera work (I was getting an odd black screen from the camera setting). Finally managed to fix my camera after the rainbow was completely faded, but then a block later another one popped up and I did manage to get a picture. Not nearly as bold as the first, but still really pretty. And all this was after seeing a surprise rainbow yesterday on the way home from work. Four rainbows in two days, not half bad!

The only one I was able to get a pic of today:

In other news, I stopped at Target to do a grocery run and instead bought two pairs of pants and two sweaters. New clothes, woohoo! And then tried to buy some pizza at the little Pizza Hut in the Target but they didn't have any - probably fourth time today I experienced a food fail. Looooong day.

Hooray for rainbows!

I love the little stories about the kids. You sound like a wonderful mentor for them.

Super glad you are having a better time with your kiddos this year. I seldom see rainbows--too far down in the valley to see them here, I think. I think both your pics are good.

Around here, I have to be in the right place at the right time to catch a rainbow. The east-facing window in my classroom is a great place to catch them in the afternoons.

Four rainbows in two days sounds pretty good to me! Thanks for posting the stories you could remember!

The benefit of rainy fall days is more chance of a rainbow sighting. :)
