Snow Sculpture

A conversation with [livejournal.com profile] eve11 Monday evening into yesterday went something like this:

Eve: More snow coming. May have to build a snow TARDIS tomorrow.
Me: Ooh, I'll build a snow K-9 if you build a TARDIS.
Eve: Hm, what about a K-9 in exchange for a Dalek - the TARDIS might get mistaken for a shed.
Me: Totally. You're on.

However, yesterday I totally wimped out. After playing in the snow with a couple of little kids for a while in the morning, I came home cold and wet. By the time I'd dried off and gotten warm, I had no desire to venture back out again. On top of that, the snow was completely powdery and it seemed doubtful a snow K-9 would be workable.

And then we got another three or four inches over night. Not near as much as they were calling for originally, thank goodness. And the movie theaters weren't showing early afternoon matinees and I had nothing to do. So, I shoveled the sidewalk, cleaned the stovetop (my God it was disgusting) and then squared my shoulders. Time to build a snow robot dog. Well, unearth a snow robot dog might by the more accurate description. I made it as far as my back deck, which had close to four feet of snow drifted into the corner. Hm, I said to myself. No need to clear the steps down to the back yard when I've got all this snow here. And so, this happened:

I couldn't think of any way to make his head stay on his body, so I just made it a slightly worse for wear K-9. He certainly had this sort of experience often enough on the show.

The snow, as expected, was very powdery and difficult to work with. Which meant that I was able to pack large clumps of it together, but creating any sort of fine detail was nearly impossible with the tools to hand (to wit: my hands, encased in very large, clumsy mittens or my fingers, not encased in clumsy mittens but freezing cold). Thus the comically drawn paper bits.

It's still snowing, which you can see even in the pictures - he was nice and packed down when I finished him and by the time I got the paper bits on to photograph him, he was covered all over with a fluffy layer of new snow.

Holy smokes, look at your porch! And OMG K-9! In a few pieces but he looks great! Maybe when it warms up a little bit you can figure out how to attach his head. And I can figure out how to attach my Dalek's head too. Right now, he is in the process of getting completely snow-covered. *sighs*

Luckily, it's just the back porch, but it drifted really high in the corner.

I have a feeling if I so much as touch K-9's head any time soon, it will revert to its millions of constituent snowflake parts. I think he's beyond repair, lol. It was definitely a good diversion from the endless boredom, however. :)

being clueless, I have no idea what a tardis or talek is but k-9 and dog robot I could figure out!

The TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) is Doctor Who's police box spaceship. And Daleks are his enemy numero uno. K-9 is a robotic dog (which you've already figured out) and was one of the Doctor's traveling companions during some of the Fourth Doctor's adventures. :)

That's amazing! K-9! Even with the head unattached he looks great (besides it's nothing that a sonic screwdriver can't fix). And the idea of a snow Dalek warms my heart. ♥

The Doctor's fixed him after worse, lol.

If the snow Dalek gets put together, I'll post a link for you. :)

Thanks! I'd love to see it :)

[livejournal.com profile] eve11 finally got a chance to make her Snow Dalek, with the most recent snow. Here's the link.

Thanks so much for linking! :D

Highly creative in a comically destructive sort of way! I'm hiding the pictures from Ru and Sandy, however, because I don't think they want to see even robotic dogs decaptitated!

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be sure not to mention it to Ru and Sandy. The good thing about being a robot dog, though, is that decapitation is repairable. :)

Awesome! Poor K-9's lost his head! But I'm sure the Doctor will fix it again!

For some reason this reminds me of Calvin & Hobbes. And Foxtrot.

The Doctor is currently refilling his Jelly Baby supply, but I'm sure as soon as he gets back, he'll have K-9 back on his feet. :)

He's quite the handsome snow robot dog!

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. He would wag his tail at you if it hadn't fallen off during the storm. :)

Glad you had fun with the snow. Me, not so much!

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty tired of the snow, myself, by this time. I'm actually relieved to be going back to work tomorrow.

A+ for effort. I love things made from snow. Very creative.

Thanks. :)

Good job! Glad you had fun in the snow!
=D

Thanks. We get this kind of snowfall so rarely, it seems a shame to not take advantage of it for some good old fashioned play. :)

[identity profile] lily-the-hobbit.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This is amazing!
K-9 would definitely approve.... well, maybe he wouldn't seeing that he sort of lost his head :p

Some people clean when they have nothing else to do. I create robot dogs in the backyard, lol.

[identity profile] westwindschild.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Very good K-9! Sounds like you had fun. Reminds me of the presidential snow sculptures I made during the President's day weekend blizzard in 1993. Don't expect any picspam of snow creations by me this time out!!!

[identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had another week off work, I'd be tempted to create some more sculptures, but as it is, I have a feeling one small robot dog is as much as I'm going to do.

[identity profile] westwindschild.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
One such excellent sculpture is quite enough, I'm sure! The only snow sculptures I'm going to claim this year are the giant mounds of snow thrown up to the sides of the walkway and around the cars!
