Digital Preservation was kinda fun, in an 'Oh dear God, no' way. We started looking at some of the technical issues involved - this week we learned formulas for calculating resolution (dpi), Pixel width and height, etc. Fun manipulation of numbers unless, like me, numbers are the grown up equivalent of the monster under the bed. I understood how to do all the manipulations, I just can't add or subtract for shit. *sigh*

Watched Atlantis last night. Only one more episode until probably July or August. :(

Genealogy as procrastination

This is why it is so very hard for me to get any real work done.

I've got this collection of papers I'm supposed to create an Administrative History for. Okay, not ridiculously hard, if I'd just do it. So I'm working on it, sorting through some of the letters and things, trying to get a sense of what the institution's functions and activities were, and I come across a letter from a Morris Sheppard, a U.S. Senator (in 1941) on the Committee for Military Affairs. And this is where I get a little side-tracked. Because, as some of you may know, I'm a little obsessed interested in Stargate Atlantis, which has Lt. Col. John Sheppard as the main character. Now, my brain goes, maybe Morris here is Shep's grandfather. (Actually, in reality Morris' grandson is Connie Mack, III). Morris' dad is a John Sheppard, so the name is already in the family. Now I really want to play around with family trees and how it is that the Shep's branch of the family moved away from politics and into the military, blah, blah, blah. Someone stop me, please.

Edit: The Admin History is done and submitted. So that's one thing done. But I just looked at my calendar and realized I've got a paper due on Tuesday that I forgot all about. It's only a three-pager, and while it does require some reference to the professional literature, it's not a research paper, so I'm not panicking about it, but it does mean that I'll have to put in a lot more work time this weekend than I was planning - and it doesn't look like it will allow much time for D. :( In light of that, I suppose I'd better do some reading tonight that I would otherwise put off until the weekend, even if I do really just want to go to bed.
