Today was a field trip day. All four preschool rooms were supposed to go to Heinz Hall for a Tiny Tots symphony. This requires two buses, so we ordered two buses. Only one bus came, however. Luckily, our two four-year-old rooms were the first ones outside and we were already on the bus when we found out there was no second one. Oops, somebody messed up. We thought we'd be able to squeeze at least one more group on the bus if we put the kids three to a seat, so we rearranged everyone, just in time for the bus driver to announce that Laidlaw was sending out another bus for us. With that settled we took off, fifteen minutes late.

It took us a ridiculous half hour to get downtown and we found out halfway there that the second bus still hadn't shown. There was officially no way they could make it on time at that point. We barely made it ourselves, hustling the kids through the hall to our seats up front just as the lights dimmed and the orchestra started getting ready to play.

The theme of the show was Curious George and they had the Man with the Yellow Hat come out on stage to read the original CG story to the kids, with the orchestra playing various pieces at different points throughout. It was interesting, but the kids were a little noisier and more restless than they were at the last one, which was a more straightforward symphony performance. Still, the kids seemed to like most of the music, although they found the Sunset piece to be a little boring (judging by how much shifting around and talking there was).

Afterwards, our school was one of the last ones dismissed from the hall and by the time we made it back to our bus it was quarter after twelve. We were all hungry and tired and ready to get back to school for lunch and nap. One little problem. While our bus was right where we'd left it, our driver was nowhere in sight. We finally opened the doors let ourselves on, because it was cold. We ended up having to wait ten minutes (with small children, this is at least a half a lifetime) for our bus driver to come back. He'd been under the impression that the show ended at 12:30. While waiting, we came up with some wild speculation about where he might be - I thought possibly he'd been kidnapped. By a swarm of angry butterflies, added Team Leader (straight from 'Miss Nelson is Missing' a book we had read before the symphony this morning).

All in all, it was a rather hectic and stressful morning. The other two rooms did finally get a bus, but far too late to even attempt the symphony, so they went to the museum instead. Seems Barack Obama was in Oakland, tying up traffic, which was why the second bus took so long to arrive. This is funny, because yesterday one of the teachers in the kindergarten was complaining that almost certainly something would happen to prevent his group from going on the field trip (their last two trips were cancelled due to bad weather). He was coming up with ever wilder reasons for why they wouldn't be able to go and one of the things he said was 'oh, Hillary Clinton will show up for a speech or something and traffic will be all tied up and we won't be able to get through.' I laughed at him for being so absurdly pessimistic. Silly me.
