Pittsburgh Comic Con
Apr. 27th, 2008 06:42 pmToday was a day for donning costumes and venturing forth to be geeky with the geeks. Admission was free to the con if you were in costume so we got there a little after twelve, hid ourselves in the ladies room to make our transformation, and then strolled into the Con room, fully attired Cat-Nuns.
eve11 made new hats, which was a godsend, since I threw mine away after Dragon*Con last year. This is a small little con and there isn't a huge Doctor Who contingent, but plenty of people still recognized us for who we were (there were also several people who thought we were flying nuns *sigh*). It's not a very flashy costume - no spandex, no bright colors - just homesewn grey and white cotton. But the faces catch people's attention. And we do a decent enough job of blending the edges of the latex masks that people often aren't sure if we've accomplished the effect with a mask, entirely with makeup, or some combination of the two.
We entered the costume contest, which unfortunately entailed spending pretty much the entire afternoon in the room designated for the contest, watching the 'organizers' bumbling around with their thumbs up their asses, trying largely in vain to figure out how to line people up. As an exercise in organization, it was a big ol' FAIL. It was fun, though, to see all the different costumes, and the little skits or actions that each person or group did. Sadly, neither of us are anything like performers, so we managed some sort of stilted little conversation and then scurried off the stage. Needless to say, we did not win. The winners of the group category (what we were in) were a group of zombie Marvel characters. Their costumes, for the most part, looked pretty crappy, but they had a very entertaining skit, and I think they also probably had a good bribe for the judges although I don't really remember (bribes are not only accepted but officially encouraged - with a separate award category for best/most inventive bribe).
By the time the costume contest was over, the con was pretty much over as well. So we de-costumed, said a few final fairwells to the Strumhaus crew and headed off in search of food. I will probably be picking latex adhesive off my skin and out of my hair for days, but because I didn't use the adhesive remover, I think I will avoid the skin irritation I had at Dragon*Con, which was somewhat unpleasant.
So that's another weekend pretty much over and done with. The Pens won the second game in the series with the Rangers, 2-0. We caught the last forty seconds (and the second goal) of the game as we were leaving the con. There was a Pirates game this afternoon - no idea who won that. Tomorrow it's back to work. But in the meantime, I still have a few hours in which to relax and enjoy my cats, my dvds and the sunshine.
