Good Grief!
Nov. 27th, 2010 05:42 pmI don't cook much. When I had a microwave, I relied on it heavily. But every now and then I get the urge to make something that needs to spend some time in the oven. And the oven that I have is very smelly. Over the summer I used it and it smelled strongly enough of something (not smoky at all) that it set the smoke detector off. The few times I've used it since then, I've made sure to open all the windows so as not to asphyxiate myself or the cats.
However, I'm hosting a small Christmas gathering at my place this year and I'd like to be able to cook some food, so yesterday I mentioned the problem to my landlady. Being 84 and somewhat hard of hearing, I don't think she understood exactly what the problem was, because she called the gas company today and they said they'd be here within the hour, that I'm not to turn anything in the apartment either on or off and to just sit tight.
Considering the fact that whatever is causing the odor has been going on ever since I moved in three years ago, I don't think the place is going to explode the next time I turn a light on. But they've got me all freaked out, none the less.
I just better not get yelled at for crying 'wolf' is all I have to say. When I mentioned it to the landlady, I figured she'd get a repair person to come out and look at the stove. *sigh*
Update: Well, the good news is that the stinky smell is just a harmless stinky smell. I'm free to use the oven as much as I like. Except, oh wait. No, I'm not, because the gas company found a leak in the pipes in the basement and has shut off our gas. D'oh! While the leak has probably been there for years and is, itself, mostly harmless, there's no way the gas company is going to overlook it and open itself up to a law suit should anything bad ever happen. This means the furnace and water heater are both turned off, as well, since they run on gas. Thank goodness it's not freezing out. Oh, wait. Well, it's one degree above, and falling fast. It should be around 26F/-3C overnight.
Landlady's on the phone with the plumber now and I suspect she'll splurge to have them come out sooner rather than later to run the pressure test on the lines and fix/replace everything that needs to be done. This is going to be expensive for her and I'm feeling very guilty because it is pretty needless and if I hadn't said anything, she wouldn't be having to do this.
Update the second: Just talked with Landlady and the plumbers won't be coming until Monday morning. I understand her desire to not spend the extra to bring them out on a Sunday, since she also has to get the washing machine fixed and now she's also having some sort of problem with her tub. The old place is just falling to pieces this winter. Anyway, I'm hoping that by the time I get home from work on Monday, everything will be fixed.
