Apr. 8th, 2013 08:20 pmBeing the anxious kitty mom that I am, I didn't get a lot of sleep last night - I woke up around four (after forcing myself to go to bed at one) and then had to keep checking to make sure Mal was still with me. He was pretty low but hung out on the bed with me all night so at least it was easy to keep a close eye on him.
The vet was able to find an appointment for us this morning, so that was a relief. He had just the slightest elevated temperature, but they said that was just as likely caused by the stress of the car ride and dismay at being at the vet. He put up with everything they did until the vet started palpating his belly. Ooh, my cat knows a lot of bad words in Cat. The original plan was to get x-rays of his abdomen, give him fluids and some anti-nausea meds, and possibly trim his claws while they were at it. They got as far as x-rays before deciding that had been enough stress for my demon-child and themselves. There was no way they thought they could get an IV needle into him without sedating him and they didn't think he was dehydrated enough for that to be the best course for him.
So we were sent off with instructions to take him home, get some water into him if we could, and try to get him to eat a morsel or two of mushy food this evening. Of course, after all the indignities of the visit, he took off into deep hiding as soon as
lyda_pearl got him home (I had to go straight to work, but luckily, she was able to keep an eye on him for a few hours before going off to work herself). So he continued to have nothing to drink until after seven this evening. And then, when I finally got home, it took me forever to find him, hiding under the sofa.
Once I unceremoniously yanked him out and squirted some water into his mouth, he seemed to revive a little bit. He's had a little more water and seems more alert this evening, but has so far turned away from the mushy food I've offered him. All the water's stayed down and twice I've seen him hovering over the water bowl, which is a hugely promising sign, in my opinion. Still, if I can't get him to eat (and keep down) something before too long, he'll have to go back to the vet for some combination of anti-nausea meds and appetite stimulants. Also IV fluids if I can't get him to drink enough. So, still a fun time for us all, but he's doing at least marginally better and I'm going to just focus on that.
