The family in the apartment above us seemed to be having some plumbing difficulties yesterday. Maintenance men showed up at our door bright and early asking us if we were having any trouble with water backing up in the tub, as the people upstairs had complained about that. Nope, no trouble at all, says I. Famous last words and all.

I listened to the sounds of work coming from the apartment upstairs as I was getting ready for work, happy to know that wasn't us. Totally failed to knock on wood.

At some point during the mid-morning hours, lots of water started seeping through our bathroom ceiling and down the wall by the door. So the workmen had to come back and take half of our ceiling and a bit of wall out to let the moisture dry. And this morning, we noticed that the laminate floor boards were damp and curling up around the edges. It would seem that the water continued seeping down the inside of the wall and under the flooring in the hallway. I can only imagine what the place will look like when I get home. I'm assuming, though, that a large section of the laminate is going to have to come up so that that cement underneath can dry, before being replaced. This isn't actually a tragedy since that bit of flooring needed to be replaced anyway. They blundered when they put it in, and fastened it down instead of letting it float. And then the first hot, humid week of summer it all buckled up and popped. So we've had a spot in the hallway where the laminate is broken and overlapped, all year. We did mention it to the maintenance people, but nothing ever happened about getting it fixed. Till now.
