Aug. 10th, 2014 10:57 pmToday I remembered that the sewing part of costuming is a pain in the, well, the back to be honest. One of these days I'm going to be a proper grown-up, with a proper sewing/crafting table. Until then, I will continue to do all of my work on the floor, and continue to whine about how much my back hurts. Ouch!
I allowed myself a lazy Sunday morning (aside from doing the litter boxes and unloading the dishwasher) and got to work around 11:30, by doing some vacuuming on the floors I'd be working on. Everything took much longer than expected, which is some law of costuming, I'm pretty sure. First I realized that the fabric I'd picked out was pretty thin and slightly see-through in the right lighting but the skirt pattern didn't call for a lining. Luckily, I bought a ton more fabric than I needed so I just cut out two sets of everything and voila, lined skirt! So, pinning, cutting, unpinning, repinning, cutting more, etc. till the end of time. Or at least well into mid-afternoon. And then, instead of just putting the pieces of the skirt together, I had to baste all of the extra layers in. And then I had to deal with the zipper. Possibly my least favorite sewing thing, putting in zippers. But I managed to figure out which foot was the zipper foot, and everything seems to be working fine. All of the skirt panels are now put together, but I still need to do the waist band bit, and hem the bottom. It's going to be a couple inches shorter than I'd originally planned because I'm so used to skirts being excessively long and having to trim them down, that I failed to measure the pattern before cutting the fabric. Oh well. It will be fine. I will just wear brown tights so that I don't have to do makeup on my legs. Or, if I have enough time when everything else is done, I could try to add some sort of panel to the bottom, if I can find a way to do it that doesn't look stupid. Even with all the extra pieces I still have plenty of fabric if I decide to go that route.
