So, Heroes last night.
Okay, so I've seen all the episodes, but only through intermittent bursts of interest. The concept of the show is moderately interesting but not too original (a bunch of mutants running around doing good and bad mutanty things). Only a small handful of the actors really did anything for me (Malcolm McDowall, Christopher Eccleston). Possibly my favorite character was Mr. Bennett, because he was the only one that didn't come across pretty black and white in his motivations. You never knew what he was going to do next, which alliance he was going to betray, whether today he was going to be a good guy or a bad guy.
So, that all being said, I was conflicted about watching the season finale last night. I kinda wanted to see how it ended, but I kinda didn't care, because I was pretty sure the explosion would be prevented in the end, so there wasn't a lot of tension in the wait. Truth be told, I was a little disappointed. Yeah, I was pleased that Nathan stepped up to the plate, finally letting his humanity overcome his desire for power. And we've certainly been given glimpses occasionally along the way that he did love Peter more than he usually acted, but it still felt a little Mary Sue-ish of him (or I suppose that would be Marty Stue), to all of a sudden be the self-sacrificing one who finds another way.
I'm curious about who the Bigger Bad Guy is that Molly is afraid to even think about. I can't help but wonder if it's not Mom Petrelli. We've had no hint, so far, what her power is (at least, if there's been hints, I missed them) and she seemed so very focused on making that explosion happen. And she knew about it very early on, too, possibly even before Isaac painted it and Hiro witnessed it, judging by the conversation with Charles.
This is another one of those shows that I think would have been great if they'd decided from the start to make it only one season long, and then not be afraid to have real consequences at the end. Instead, they've complicated the plot at the last minute in order to keep things going, and they made it pretty painless, with just about everyone surviving - except, really, I can't see any way of bringing Nathan back and I don't think they should. I think he should be allowed to have died heroically, saving his brother and his city, because I don't think Peter's dead (or at least, not permanently dead). If he survived being the origination of the blast in the first timeline, I think he can survive being the origination of the blast plus a huge fall, unless he's simply too splatted to pull himself back together again, in the current timeline.
Anyway, I'll probably watch it again next season about as much as I did this season, every now and again, and dling the episodes I missed when I feel like it's time to catch up.
In other news, I've acknowledged and accepted the fact that I'm doomed to live in the past for the most part, especially when it comes to music. Every now and again there will be something current that I like, but mostly, I just continue to listen to the oldies but goodies. Yes, I am my parents. *sigh* I actually downloaded some music from iTunes yesterday (only the second time I've done that - I really am a dinosaur). One Five for Fighting song which is only a year or two old, I think - 100 Years. It was playing on the radio yesterday morning and I got a sudden, irresistable urge to write a fic inspired by it (got a little over 2000 words written yesterday, probably will now sit on my harddrive for a couple of years) so went off and dled it to have as writing inspiration. Then, in order to continue the musical inspiration theme, I had to go find a bunch of music from the early eighties to reference in the fic. This led to a desperate need to obtain a copy of Men at Work's Business as Usual album, which I no longer have because I got rid of all my cassettes a couple of years ago (goodbye music collection, I loved you well). Oh, how I love that album, I'm a sucker for sax music like they have, and I love Colin Hay's voice. *is happy*
