I'm taking a short break from the cabin in the woods. I'm at my mom's doing laundry. Apparently, going on vacation in the middle of the summer means it's going to be cold all week. I only packed a few things for cold weather, foolishly expecting it to be summer. So now I'm washing everything.
I've been having a lovely time, however. Went on a delightful hike in the woods yesterday. It was raining steadily and rather colder than I was expecting but Delaware State Forest (in PA, not DE) is truly beautiful. Not an old forest, the trees are skinny and there is much open space between them. The ground is covered with sweet smelling ferns and it is just so refreshing to get out into nature for a bit.
I saw many bright orange newts and tiny little hopping toads, not more than half an inch big. I also got a botany lesson from my brother-in-law, not much of which I will ever remember.
We put together a murder-mystery jigsaw puzzle last night. This was entertaining, to say the least. There were about nine of us working on the thing, which involved two 500 piece puzzles mixed together, with no picture for either. It only took us probably four or five hours to get them both together and solve the mystery. A good way to pass a rainy evening in the middle of nowhere.
I learn more about my family, good and bad, every time I see them. This visit is proving no exception to that rule.
