It's been ages since I've found the emotion/creative energy to get any sort of fannish project going, but this weekend I've stirred myself up. I WILL go to Dragon Con next year and I WILL have fabulous costumes to take with me! This is a vow I am making to myself and my con-going partner in crime, [livejournal.com profile] eve11.

I have two costume ideas floating around in my head. The first one is Agatha Heterodyne, from Girl Genius. I already have some of the component parts for her so mostly what I need to do is put the pieces together, accessorize, and find a great wig. The second idea will need a bit more work. Way back in (holy crap) 2007, Eve and I got adventurous with the latex and created life casts of our faces in order to make prosthetic cat noses/cheeks for our Sisters of Plenitude outfits. It was a lot of fun and worked really well for the costumes. Since then we've mostly stuck to our sewing skills (aside from some crafting and body painting) for our costumes. But I want to try to do something complex and adventurous again this year, since I'm planning far enough in advance to work on things that are time consuming and require a lot of trial and error.

I want to do Jabe, a Tree of Cheem, from the End of the World episode of Doctor Who (ninth doctor). Her dress is basically the same pattern I used for Steampunk Five, with just a few alterations, so that's no problem. But her head, now, that's another story.

This is going to require a bit of prosthetics around the edges of the face and then an elaborate sculpted headpiece. Time to hit the books and refresh myself on how to do all that!

BUT! Before I can start on either of those two fun projects, I need to buckle down and finish the one I'm currently working on, which is a cross-stitch that I should have finished months and months ago. I pulled it out on Thursday and got back to work. And poor little Mal, who has been very content with my non-crafty self this past fifteen months, was most dismayed, frightened and angered by my attention to something other than his royal self. Lots of hissing and threatening behaviors from him resulting in exile to the bedroom two nights in a row. It's so good to have a decent sized room I can lock him in when he's misbehaving, even if it does mean I have to listen to him crying at the door for hours at a time. Maybe he'll let me work in peace today and I can let him have the run of the apartment.
