auntiemeeshOn the way home from work this evening, I stopped at the little market along the way to pick up something for dinner. I was wandering the aisles with my headphones on, listening to some Mark Maddon hockey talk, when I realized this woman was talking to me. I was a bit befuddled and it took me a long moment to realize a) that it was actually me and not someone behind me that she was talking to, and b) that I actually knew her.
Her daughter, A, was in my toddler room in 2001-02. It seems like just last year until her mom casually mentioned that A entered high school this year and is a lofty 5'9". And amazingly, this kid is still friends with the kids she/her parents were friends with when she was one year old.
Anyway, the mom chatted with me while I was ringing my stuff up and then gave me a ride home (they live in a close by neighborhood). She also gave me her work and cell numbers with strict instructions that I should call to ask for a ride anytime I need it.
I was really close with this family for a couple of years after their daughter moved on from my room, and even spent Christmas with them one year, but I hadn't seen them in a long while. It was great to hear how A is doing, but even nicer just to see an old friend and talk with someone who could easily have passed right by me without making the effort to get my attention.
I tend to think of myself as someone who doesn't make friends easily, but moments like this remind me that I may not be the sort of person who has a crowd around her, but the friends I do make are the good kind.
