I start my new job tomorrow. After spending all this time unemployed I'm very grateful to have work, but the lazy me is oh so reluctant to have to actually interrupt my lovely summer to *go* to work.

*speaks sternly to lazy self*

In other news, I drove in heavy rain today. I know this excites all of you terribly. It kinda freaked me out, but I did it. All of the many ruts in the road filled with water and the steering wheel kept getting tugged in my hands, and the speedometer was stuck at 42mph so I had no idea how fast I was going, but it was clearly not fast enough for the person in the car right immediately 'on my butt' behind me. Sigh.

I hate tailgaters. There's nothing that will make me slow down to a crawl faster than some jerk riding on my bumper. At least if we're only doing 20 m.p.h. the damage won't be so bad when they screw up!

I've been really consciously trying to make sure I keep a good distance between me and the person in front of me, so it just offends me a bit when someone gets right up on my tail. I don't feel confident of my own driving skills yet that I could be comfortable with having someone else so close to me. But some people are just idiots and I have to accept that fact. I just hope I'm not there when they get into an accident.

Hee! My mom had been looking for a job for 6 months and just got the perfect job last week. She was all excited and then suddenly realized "awwwww, now I can't just do anything I want all summer"

Oh, I hate driving in that Matrix 3 rain, so heavy the wipers can't keep up and if you turn at all you might hydroplane. One dark, rainy night I was driving out of Vancouver to Mission and there was literally a pool at the end of an overpass. My heart had a work out that night.

Yay for your mom! It's great to finally find the perfect job, but it is hard to face that moment when you have to start getting up early and no longer having the freedom to do whatever you want during the day.

Congratulations on the new job and on driving in the rain. I hate tail-gaters with a pasion. Makes me want to slow down even more when they do that. It is so dangerous and especially in the rain. Some people who have driver's licenses simply should never have been issued one.

Thanks. The problem with drivers' licenses is that people are careful when they are learning and taking the test, but once they have their license, they figure they can do whatever they want from then on.

Silly people!

Just ignore people like that. You have as much right to be on the road as they.

That's what I've been doing, but they make me anxious. I suppose someday I'll feel more confident about my own driving skills and then I won't be as stressed out by all the other people sharing the road with me. :D

I know the anxiety feeling, but you know I think part of their impatience is the big red L plate. When I'm in the car as a passanger there is the old "Uho Learner" joke, which okay I participate in, but natural reaction.

Sounds like you are doing just fine. Certainly progressing very fast.

But even so, I hope your first day at work has gone well. As you can see, I am still being a lazy bum here at "work" and am avoiding most real work.

Work? What is this thing you speak of? I much prefer laziness. :D

I'm happy and sad for you on the job...

when that steering wheel is tugging at your hand like that you are hydroplaning a little. Knowing how much tread is on the tires will help you know how to react... If the tires are newer and have deep tread, then slowing down a bit will eliminate the issue. If the tread is shallow or the owner of the car said something absently like, "I have to get new tires by winter" slow way down, hydroplaning occurs at much lower speed in that case. Your other option is to look at the road ahead... if you can see indentations or 'ruts' from heavy truck traffic, steer up out of them. This usually requires you stay in your lane but over a tad to get out of the rut. If your side has 3 or more lanes then get out of the right one, as that is where most trucks travel. There is no cause to fear this condition, but you should take it seriously. Esp. when you live where it rains a lot...

Heh, here you can just wait for the storm to pass, and the sun to come out :D

Apparently the car I was driving has really good tires and doesn't hydroplane easily, but the ruts in the road are really deep because they are constantly driven over by logging trucks. I'll get better at seeing and avoiding those ruts eventually, I suppose.

Heh, here you can just wait for the storm to pass, and the sun to come out

I keep *meaning* to move to Denver. Now I have another reason. :D

The bobos in Denver don't know how to drive in heavy rain. And it does rain sometimes! (I grew up there, and my mom still lives there, so I visit often.) The last time I was on the highway in a Denver downpour I was the only person who seemed to think that there was any reason to slow down... Boston drivers have a bad rep, but most of them won't tailgate in the rain!

heh, actually roughly everyday at 3pm during the summer... it rains for an hour or so... if you are unlucky it hails... usually lightning is involved. It's best to watch from indoor...

As to the driving, mmm, I have lived many places in the US... and driven everywhere [I helped myself through college driving trucks] and drivers have habits that vary by the region they learned to drive in... Locals, yeah not so good with the rain, OK with snow... Easterners, good with rain, think our snow removal sucks, sometimes a bit uptight too... southerners seem to immediately buy the big-honkin' Cadillac Escalade/Suburban and think that will solve every problem [um no 4X4 doesn't help you stop and those 24" custom rims have RAIN tires on them, maybe you should just stay home today]... and westerners esp. Californinas think we drive too slow... on the up side I can get anywhere in metro denver w/in an hour in rush hour... [when I was in chicago it would easily take 2 plus...] on the down side if you don't live near light rail, public transport isn't so good. Meh, everyplace has trade-offs, all has to do with what you can live with...

but you can't beat the view: View from the Denver Museum Of Nature and Science Looking west over city park

Yeah, it's nice -- at least before the smog builds up! *gets out rocking chair* I can remember when you could see the mountains most days, clear as a bell... made for a heckuva wonderful distraction from school teachers lecturing about Latin.

heeeee, I can see that once you left you ain't never comin' back...

you might wanna check back sometime though... if pollution is a concern because of asthma and such, you may want to check HERE to see how a place you like stacks up... for me it had to be a combination of job AND then good place to live... and happily both were here [front range colorado isn't on the bad lists]...as with anything your milage may vary

hey, not-so-lazy Meesh:
I hear you've gotten ANOTHER job. Are you going to work both? If so, will you be able to help support temporarily unemployed but spending like they were made of money relatives?

From: [identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com
Well it's not entirely true that I've got another job. I applied for a job at the new coffee house, but the woman who runs it is the daughter of the woman at the college who runs the child care center, and when the coffee house woman heard that I was applying for a couple of different jobs over there, she became very enthusiastic about that and seemed to think I would be wasting my time working at the coffee house, so we'll see if I hear from them or not.
