Well, I had my first day at the grocery store, today. Orientation and training, with more training to follow on Friday. Joy oh joy.

This afternoon [livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl and I went to the new coffee house in town - the only coffee house in town - which just opened last week. It turns out they are hiring right now for an evening shift. Part time with the probability of becoming full-time at some point. I filled out an application. I would love to leave the IGA and work at the coffee house. I chatted with the couple who run the place for a while and they seem to be really great, fun folks.

When they saw my application, however, they wondered why I didn't apply for a teaching job. (This was based solely on the fact that I have a BA, not my elem. certification, which I didn't mention on the app.) Apparently there is a dearth of teachers in NH and they hire anyone with a college degree, regardless of what it's in. This is something to keep in mind if I get desperate. After I explained what I'd been doing the past few years, the woman, J, asked why I didn't apply at the college daycare center, so I said that I had. Well, it turns out the J's mom runs the day care center, and when she looked at my application, she remembered that her mom had mentioned that someone with my degree (interdisciplinary studies) had applied to the position. It seems that the woman hasn't interviewed anyone else yet, so I'm feeling more hopeful about that. On the other hand, J thought that I shouldn't waste my time applying to a coffee house when I was going to be able to get a real job, so I might be stuck at the IGA for a bit longer, until I hear more. *sigh* It would have been great to call the grocery store and say, sorry, I don't think it's gonna work out.

After coffee, we went to a local thrift store and I found a great shirt for my Chiana Quixote costume. It has the perfect slightly silvery-grey sheen. It's not really the right cut but that can be taken care of pretty easily. *bg*

And finally, I think I finally found the plot for my [livejournal.com profile] neurotic_bards original story, so all is going swimmingly.

Maybe she'll give her mom the nudge forward to hire you for the daycare job :D

BTW, what is interdisciplinary studies?

She asked me if I wanted her to say something to her mom and I jumped on it. "That would be great!" That's when she looked closer at my application and said, "wait, do you have a master's? I think my mom was telling me about you."

It's a small world. Really small up here. :D

Interdisciplinary Studies is the fancy term for a 'design your own' major. I threw a bunch of similar classes into clusters, called it Human Cultural Evolution and was given a BA, lol.

You do seem to be getting a lot of the "you're overqualified" response to your job applications. Try not to be discouraged by it. Just think of it as a reflection of your inherent star quality, and walk around with your head held high. (Try not to have your nose in the air too much, however.)

A job at a coffee house sure would be nice though. Perhaps you'd get to help "dispose of" left-over baked goods at the end of the day. There could be worse jobs!

Well, that's what happens when you're over qualified for the jobs you're applying for. But I may take to lurking at the coffee house until they take pity on me and just hire me. :D

From no job at all to a sea of possible ones plus the one you already have. Sounds like everything is looking up. I worked in a bookstore with a coffee counter and some days it was lots of fun working over there and making the coffee, but there were some rather snotty customers from time to time. On the whole I enjoyed it though.

Congrats on the job! Funny, I hadn't seen mention of an IGA store in years and years and now in a week's time I've seen it twice, last week I saw one in Copperhill, Tennessee and now your mention of it here. :-) Good luck with both the set job and the prospects. Sounds encouraging. You are, aren't you, going to be able to be off Sept. 1-4? ;-)
