So, the plan for today was to take the driving test, just to see what they expect, particularly in terms of parking, manueverability, and the like. Naturally it would be nice to pass, but the main point was that neither I nor my sister had any idea what is expected of new drivers in New Hampshire.
The test taking proceedure is a little weird, to my PA biased mind. There is no learner's permit in New Hampshire, so anyone who is of the appropriate age can get behind the wheel as long as they have a licensed driver over the age of 25 with them. There is a written test, but it's taken at the same time as the road test.
When we got the DMV I found out that the paper I'd brought to prove residency wasn't acceptable, so before I could even start my sister and I had to drive back to Berlin (the test center is in Gorham, about five miles away on the other side of Berlin) to City Hall and get a letter verifying that I was a resident. Luckily the letter I had from the Post Office with my new address was enough for them, so I didn't have to go all the way home to search out something else. Then it was back to the DMV.
There were three parts of the test today, eyesight, written and road. I was ridiculously nervous, so I was stuttering and stumbling over the simple eye test and I'm amazed they passed me, when I said seven instead of S, lol. Anyway, I made it through that hurdle and moved on the to the written test, which I also passed. Then came the road test.
I get far too nervous about these things, because I always put a ton of pressure on myself. So I was rather shaky when it came time to get in the car, but I tried to look as calm as possible, so the test guy wouldn't realize I was a freak. Those poor people must be truly brave, because the test route is on a four lane highway, and these are people who haven't yet proven any sort of competency.
The first thing I had to do was drive a mile or two down the road and turn into the grocery store parking and had me drive around. Of course, some stupid woman walked right out in front of me and I had to stop to let her cross. Then he had me pull up next to a row of empty parking spaces and reverse and turn into one of my choosing. Well, apparently most of the practice on that was done in the Subaru Forester, and I was taking the test in the Metro (the Forester has a dicky speedometer which frequently sticks at 42, which we didn't think would fly with the tester), and I completely failed to get into the spot. I calmly looked at what I'd done and said, "nope, that didn't work." He had me try again. "Nope, didn't work," I had to say again. At this point I thoroughly expected him to say, "Right, back to the DMV, you can try again next week." Instead, he said, "okay, we'll continue on to Gorham."
The rest of the test was uneventful, except that I missed a speed limit sign raising the speed limit from 30 to 40 and he pointed out to me that I could go a bit faster, lol. He made me turn left across traffic into a parking lot to turn around in Gorham and we headed back to the DMV. He marked his paper, gave me a pass, told me to practice backing up and away we went, to finish my paperwork.
I am now the proud owner of a New Hampshire Driver's License!
