I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. It was very nice, here. [livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl and Mr. P got home on Friday night, which meant no more long lonely days for me *bg* but sadly the end of vacation for them. They brought Mr. P's Aunt R. home with them and she is staying with us for a few days.

On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] whtmtnwmn and I headed for the hills with her dog, Ben. I want to get into the habit of doing more hiking, but I need to build up slowly. I've been terribly lazy the past two months, not walking anywhere, not running, no weights, no situps, nothing. So I'm well and truly out of shape now. On Sat, we went for a hike that was probably only about three miles, but about half of it was either up or down, and the hill was capped with rock, so that once you got to the top, you have to do a little bit of scaling a rock face. Very steep but walkable and only maybe ten feet up, but difficult for me because I have no balance whatsoever. Once you get to the top, you can see all of Gorham (the town next door to Berlin) spread out in the valley, and then look across the valley at Mount Washington, the Wildcats, and various other peaks that I can't remember the names of. It is a breathtaking view, and of course I forgot my camera. But I'll be going up again and I'll remember to take some pictures next time.

Yesterday we took Aunt R. to Mount Prospect, to visit the Weeks museum. Mr. Weeks was a NH state senator back in the very beginning of the twentieth century. He is a pretty important local personage because he was the one to push an act through Congress (the Weeks Act) which enabled the White Mountains to be preserved as a National Forest. His home has fantastic views front and back, and I did get a few pictures from there, so hopefully one of them will turn out. It was a hazy day, so most likely they won't be very good pics. Along the way we stopped at several lookout points and did some tree identification. Of course, I can't actually remember the names of most of the new trees that I learned but I still know what they look like. But I now know Ash, Aspen, Oak, Maple, Striped Maple, Hornbeam, Paper Birch, and Yellow Birch.

Today I had to head back to One Bean Street, the one and only coffee shop in Berlin. Today was the first day that the owners left me alone to close. It was a bit nerve-wracking for all of us, but I think it went really well. I'm sure there was something that I forgot to do, which they will tell me about tomorrow, but I didn't run into anything I couldn't handle. It was very quiet, truth be told, right up until seven o'clock, closing time. Then, of course, several people came dashing in, trying to get coffee at the last minute. And none of them wanted just a plain coffee. They all wanted either a cappuccino or a frozen drink that involved dirtying many dishes and taking forever. But finally I got everyone served and out, the door locked and the store cleaned up. I just hope I didn't forget anything crucial. I'm a worrier, though, so I'm worrying. In spite of the worrying, I do like my job a lot. It's allowed me to hobnob with the Mayor, meet through hikers, and talk with a wide variety of people. Can't do that at a daycare center!

We had some happy news this evening. We had put food and a litter box in the basement in the hope that Thor (my brother's cat who went missing Saturday afternoon) had hidden there rather than taking off. This morning the food was untouched and there was no pee-pee or poop smell (this even though he hadn't used the litter box since possibly Thursday night, friday morning) so we weren't feeling very hopeful. But this evening when Lyda Pearl checked, some of the food had been eaten and the litter box had been used! Therefore we are now feeling pretty confident that he is indeed hiding down there and will come out when he's ready. We are both feeling very relieved. Hopefully he'll let us actually see him one of these days, poor thing.

Alright, I'm off to try to finish my challenge 19 story. Wish me luck, folks.

I'm looking forward to the day when he actually allows us to see him again. Then I'll really be able to believe he's down there, lol.

Oh, I'm so happy Thor is about and hopefully by now ready to come back inside! And your description of the hike is wonderful! My lads have an ancestor from New Hampshire, the last signer of the Declaration of Independence, and somewhere up there is his grave. I'll have to look some stuff up and see if it's anywhere near you. Would just be toooo cool to take them there one day to see it. My eldest is actually named for him. A nd I'm related to the first signer. How's that for lineage? :-)

That's some pretty cool lineage you have, there. My family is a little more homespun, I must admit. Although there are rumors of a French noblewoman who fled to Holland and then England during the French Revolution. I don't know how true those rumors are, though. :D

I never heard that she fled to Holland and England - although I guess maybe GGG Granny Marie's parents may have. I think she met GGG grandpa Peter in Austria, so I had always assumed the family fled there.

My family is a little more homespun, I must admit.
Depends how you look at it, my dear; you are a genuine Daughter of the American Revolution whether you care to join the local chapter or not - your 4greats grandfather Hudson served in the Continental Army in Capt. George Nagle's company, of Reading, PA. Although an actual signer of the Declaration of Independence is certainly a star in the pedigree that we cannot boast of!

Oh! And I'm SO glad you got on at the coffee shop! What a cool place to work!

It's a lot of fun. Of course, after being unemployed for two months I've become incredibly lazy, so even though I'm only working for about four hours in the afternoon, I still have that knee-jerk 'I don't wanna go to work' reaction. I'm assuming that will fade after a little while.

Mountain hiking sounds very lovely. Scenery, I think, often makes up for breathlessness. (Something like an indoor exercise bike just isn't the same.)...If the last-minute coffee buyers just wanted a plain coffee, couldn't they get that at home? Whereas the fancy stuff, they can have you do all the work and dirty all the dishes. I'm sure you did fine at closing...And good! The cat came back/the very next day/yes the cat came back/it couldn't stay away/meow, kitty; meow so pretty/meow such a pity/the cat came back. (courtesy of my mom's New Christy Minstrels tape when I was a kid)...And good luck on your story!

I had that very same song running through my mind when I typed out the subject, lol. Although, the version I'm (roughly) familiar with is Garrison Keiller. :D

There are so many great places to hike up here, all I need to do now is make the time to do it. :D

It is indeed. I was down in the basement this morning, petting him, so I know he's real and not some phantom pooper, either. :D

Glad to hear Thor returned.

People always tend to turn up at the very last moment. I'm working at the local library and usually I have a whole bunch of people turning up two minutes before I would close - and usually these are the people who tend to bring back tons of books!

I just have to get faster at my closing routine so it doesn't take me an hour and a half every night. Then I won't mind as much if people come in right at the last minute. :D

That will, do doubt, come with time.

I went down and petted him for a while this morning. He's looking pretty good, considering he went so long without eating or using a litter box. :D

Yay! He's safe, if not necessarily sound--lol. My optimism in Thor was well placed.

Good description of the hike!

Your optimism paid off! I'm really glad he's here. We called J yesterday to officially tell him Thor was missing, so of course he showed up almost immediately after that, lol.

So glad Thor isn't lost after all! *hugs* I'm glad things are going well at the coffee shop too. It sounds like a fun place to work :)
