The cat came back
Aug. 1st, 2005 09:13 pmI hope everyone had a lovely weekend. It was very nice, here.
lyda_pearl and Mr. P got home on Friday night, which meant no more long lonely days for me *bg* but sadly the end of vacation for them. They brought Mr. P's Aunt R. home with them and she is staying with us for a few days.
On Saturday,
whtmtnwmn and I headed for the hills with her dog, Ben. I want to get into the habit of doing more hiking, but I need to build up slowly. I've been terribly lazy the past two months, not walking anywhere, not running, no weights, no situps, nothing. So I'm well and truly out of shape now. On Sat, we went for a hike that was probably only about three miles, but about half of it was either up or down, and the hill was capped with rock, so that once you got to the top, you have to do a little bit of scaling a rock face. Very steep but walkable and only maybe ten feet up, but difficult for me because I have no balance whatsoever. Once you get to the top, you can see all of Gorham (the town next door to Berlin) spread out in the valley, and then look across the valley at Mount Washington, the Wildcats, and various other peaks that I can't remember the names of. It is a breathtaking view, and of course I forgot my camera. But I'll be going up again and I'll remember to take some pictures next time.
Yesterday we took Aunt R. to Mount Prospect, to visit the Weeks museum. Mr. Weeks was a NH state senator back in the very beginning of the twentieth century. He is a pretty important local personage because he was the one to push an act through Congress (the Weeks Act) which enabled the White Mountains to be preserved as a National Forest. His home has fantastic views front and back, and I did get a few pictures from there, so hopefully one of them will turn out. It was a hazy day, so most likely they won't be very good pics. Along the way we stopped at several lookout points and did some tree identification. Of course, I can't actually remember the names of most of the new trees that I learned but I still know what they look like. But I now know Ash, Aspen, Oak, Maple, Striped Maple, Hornbeam, Paper Birch, and Yellow Birch.
Today I had to head back to One Bean Street, the one and only coffee shop in Berlin. Today was the first day that the owners left me alone to close. It was a bit nerve-wracking for all of us, but I think it went really well. I'm sure there was something that I forgot to do, which they will tell me about tomorrow, but I didn't run into anything I couldn't handle. It was very quiet, truth be told, right up until seven o'clock, closing time. Then, of course, several people came dashing in, trying to get coffee at the last minute. And none of them wanted just a plain coffee. They all wanted either a cappuccino or a frozen drink that involved dirtying many dishes and taking forever. But finally I got everyone served and out, the door locked and the store cleaned up. I just hope I didn't forget anything crucial. I'm a worrier, though, so I'm worrying. In spite of the worrying, I do like my job a lot. It's allowed me to hobnob with the Mayor, meet through hikers, and talk with a wide variety of people. Can't do that at a daycare center!
We had some happy news this evening. We had put food and a litter box in the basement in the hope that Thor (my brother's cat who went missing Saturday afternoon) had hidden there rather than taking off. This morning the food was untouched and there was no pee-pee or poop smell (this even though he hadn't used the litter box since possibly Thursday night, friday morning) so we weren't feeling very hopeful. But this evening when Lyda Pearl checked, some of the food had been eaten and the litter box had been used! Therefore we are now feeling pretty confident that he is indeed hiding down there and will come out when he's ready. We are both feeling very relieved. Hopefully he'll let us actually see him one of these days, poor thing.
Alright, I'm off to try to finish my challenge 19 story. Wish me luck, folks.

Date: 2005-08-09 08:16 pm (UTC)I never heard that she fled to Holland and England - although I guess maybe GGG Granny Marie's parents may have. I think she met GGG grandpa Peter in Austria, so I had always assumed the family fled there.
Depends how you look at it, my dear; you are a genuine Daughter of the American Revolution whether you care to join the local chapter or not - your 4greats grandfather Hudson served in the Continental Army in Capt. George Nagle's company, of Reading, PA. Although an actual signer of the Declaration of Independence is certainly a star in the pedigree that we cannot boast of!
