Trees, trees and more trees
Sep. 25th, 2005 05:08 pmI went out in the woods today with
lyda_pearl and Mr. P. The purpose of the trek, aside from being outside on a beautiful autumn day, was to identify and tag a variety of trees. Lyda Pearl is teaching a Tree and Shrub identification class this fall so she has been doing this every weekend but today was the first time I went along.
Man, I really do not know my trees. Considering how much of my life has been spent out in the woods, it's pretty shameful how little I know. I'm getting to know maples pretty well. There are a lot of maples around here. Sugar, Norway, Red, Mountain, and Striped to name just a few. The Striped Maple is just about the easiest tree around to ID, cuz the stripes on it are so distinctive. Very pretty.
We also looked at a White Birch and Yellow Birch, Bigtooth Aspen and Quaking Aspen, Alder, Beaked Hazelnut and Raisin (or Naked Witherod). How long I will remember the distinguishing characteristics for these plants remains to be seen, but it was fun to go out and use my brain for a few hours, as well as get some fresh air and take a nice little hike (it took us over an hour going out stopping every few feet to look at trees, but twenty minutes coming back without stopping).
Autumn has arrived in northern New Hampshire. The trees have begun their annual prettying up and the air is quite chill. I had to scrape frost off the windshield yesterday morning before work. Despite the approach of cold weather, I'm looking forward to seeing the fall display, which should reach it's height in a few weeks or a month. :)
