It's another lovely autumn evening here in northern New Hampshire, with cool but not freezing temps and a clear sky. We had a campfire to take advantage of the beauty of the evening. Something about staring into the depths of the fire and then lifting my head and gazing out at the universe sort of makes my head spin. I start thinking all sorts of deep things about life, the universe and everything, none of which can actually be transcribed. But it's a good feeling.

Way out here, far from the big cities, you can actually see the Milky Way, even if it is so faint you can best see it by looking elsewhere. Plus, I saw a shooting star. Shiny. :)

Oh, lucky you! I was thinking tonight, as I was walking LuckyDog up the street and looking up to the solitary star that might have been a planet, how I wish I could look up and actually see the night sky, rather than the glow from electric lights that surround my little dell where I live. I'm lucky in that my house is down in a little hollow, in the midst of a poplar and sweetgum grove, though scarecely a half mile from a major thoroughfare, and I do have a nice backyard I can walk out into and pretend I'm in the country somewhere. But there is always the sound of traffic, or sirens, or on weekends the sound of a live band two streets over and it is anything but solitary. I so want to live in a cabin up in the mountains. Once the lads are through school and in college, hopefully on their own, I am moving myself, Cat and Dog up to the mountains and get away from all this madness.

*sigh* A bonfire sounds so nice. It might be time for a camping trip. If it will EVER get cool again! I am so over hot weather I could puke.

It's weird, living so far north and at a higher elevation. We had another frost yesterday morning. It was just about 32-34 degrees when I left for work. Brrr! But then it warmed up to about 70. How do you dress for a day like that? It's better today, not as cold, and it's supposed to get up to 70 again, and it's clear and lovely, but I don't think we're going to get any more *hot* weather this fall. Which is fine with my; hot is my very least favorite weather condition. :)

It is, at least, nice and cool in the mornings, though nowhere near what you have; more in the low 60s rather than 30s, but considering how hot it's been this summer, 60s is a cold front.

It *was* a lovely evening, but I was so tired I ended up coming inside and sacking out not much past nine. I have no endurance these days. :(

That sounds lovely. I love standing on mum's balcony and look at the stars too. She lives a bit outside the city so it is easier to see, whereas I live among many houses and don't see the stars so often. :D

When I lived in Pittsburgh I couldn't see more than a few isolated stars and it seemed such a shame. I love looking out my window at nights, up here, and just staring at the stars until I fall asleep. :)

Sounds lovely. We don't get too many stars here. You could turn your first paragraph into a drabble. I can just one of the hobbits, Merry or Frodo especially, doing that :)

Lol, I was doing the same thing last night, imagining the hobbits sitting around a campfire somewhere along the road and staring up at the stars, and what sort of thoughts would pass through their minds.

Today I'm going to try to actually review a few stories before the MEFA deadline, but maybe this week I'll think about drabbling those thoughts. :)

great images in the mind... a couple months ago, I took one of the kidlets up to a place west of Pike's Peak called the lost burro campground HERE. It's outside of Cripple Creek... and very far from the light pollution of cities. The Milky Way actually looks like milk spilled by a great giant across the sky, and the heart of the scorpion is like a red jewel sinking into the west. Heh, it easy to be a little prosaic in a place like that ;)

Glad you got a chance to think some thinky thoughts... it gives a little calm perspective on this life we live... :D

Thinky thoughts are good on occasion, but I hate the fact that I can never seem to capture them in words. I suppose I made the right decision when I chose to find a practical career and not try my hand at writing for a living, lol.

Campfires, cool nights and starry skies. What more could one wish? Sounds like a lovely evening. I think I will run away and come live with you, LP and Mr P.
