Dec. 6th, 2005 05:21 pmI had a chance to get out in the woods last night, far from all the city lights, and it just so happened to be a clear, beautiful night. The only pity was that it was really too cold to stand still and stargaze as much as I would have liked. My sister and I had headed out early in the afternoon, while it was still light out and possibly even above freezing (close anyway), planning to take Shadow out in the woods for a little while. Well, we ended up deciding to get a little Christmas shopping done first and several hours later, when we finally hit the woods, it was 19 degrees Fahrenheit. And we were dressed for above freezing temps, so we were a little cold. But it really was a beautiful night! The stars seem so much clearer on cold nights.
I finally found a copy of The Commitments, yesterday. I've been looking for it all over. I know I could just buy it online, but I get stubborn about these things. For some reason, the fact that it was hard to find, made me all the more determined to find it. Well, I finally found it at a store called Music 4 Less. They had a ton of dvds as well as music and I figured if a movie about a band couldn't be found in a music/movies store, it couldn't be found anywhere, and sure enough, they had a lone copy of it. Success!
I also started learning how to drive a standard transmission yesterday. I've been putting it off ever since my sister and her husband bought a new car with standard transmission over labor day weekend. But that's the car we'll be driving to Mississippi, so I'd better be capable of driving it by then. It went pretty well actually. I don't think I actually stalled out at all. Some of my starts and stops were jerkier than I'd have liked, but I was able to get the car moving every time. I think with a decent amount of practice between now and Christmas, I should be good to go. The only real struggle for me was that the gas and brake are so much more responsive in the new car that I found myself gunning it almost every time I started, and then stopping rather more suddenly than I planned, and that was difficult, because it was feeling like the car was out of my control, and I really wanted to be able to get a feel for how responsive the car was, separate from working on shifting, but that's kind of impossible, so I had to just go with it.
I'm finally getting the email notifications for all those comments that I didn't get notified about this month. It makes for a fun game of hide and seek, as the messages sometimes get buried quite deep in my inbox and I have to page back trhough a couple weeks worth of emails to find them, lol. I was checking my lj pretty frequently so I think I probably saw most of the comments already, but if I find any that I didn't respond to, I'll try to make sure I do respond now.
Now must go make nasty hiccups go away.
