A few weeks ago, [livejournal.com profile] whtmtnwmn gave me a pair of cross-country skis that someone had given to her, which were way too small for her. Luckily they fit me perfectly. Since then it's been raining one minutes, freezing the next, thawing the minute after, and I haven't had a chance to use them.

We've had a little bit of fresh snow this week, however, and [livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl also just got new skis, so we had to go out and test them. We went over to the park next door and just made a couple of big loops around the ball field. It was great fun! I'm sure I looked pretty awkward and ungainly, as I've never attempted such a thing before. The boots that I have aren't as stiff as I expected them to be (for some reason I thought they'd be more like downhill ski boots) and the skis I have a narrower than my sister's so my ankles wobbled over a lot, but I only fell once, the first time Lyda Pearl suggested we try turning. My body turned, the skis did not and down I went, nearly plowing my face into the snow, lol. But I hopped back up and it didn't take very long to get the hang of it. Now I can't wait to take them out on a trail and give them a real test.

Yay! Glad you like them! Let me know if you want company on those trails.
=D

I'll definitely want company, although it will probably be the same as with the snowshoes. I'll be slow and get tired quickly, lol.

It sounds like a lot of fun! I hope that you will have many more opportunities to play with them (and your new snow shoes) in the coming weeks. YOu'll be a good, good, good fit-for-life person in no time!

All I have to do is force myself to go out and use them when I'm feeling cold or tired or lazy, which is nearly all the time. :)

Awesome! XC skiing is a ton of fun, and soooo much cheaper than downhill.

Always remember to have everything ready for hot cocoa when you get home.

That's a good suggestion, I'll try to keep it in mind. :)

Don't forget that cocoa is also a fine delivery mechanism for schnapps, Kahlua or Godiva liqueur.

Too bad I've given up chocolate. But decaf makes a good delivery mechanism as well.

As a decaf drinker myself, I agree.

And you should be quite pleased with yourself! I'm glad the weather cooperated, and I hope you get another chance to use them soon. Oops, Griffin's calling.

We made it out this morning, for a bit of a skiing romp. We didn't stay out too long though, because Lyda Pearl started bonking a bit and we had forgotten to bring any power bars or gorp with us. I was still feeling pretty strong when we turned around but by the time we got back to the car I was more than ready to take the skis off and sit down for awhile.
