[livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl came home this evening with a surprise. I'm going to be playing Katherine Hepburn in one of those 'dinner and a murder mystery' things. Just this morning we had discussed signing up, but then by this evening had decided not to for a variety of reasons. However, someone volunteered us, so LP found our assignments when she went to pick up Mr. P.

It should be a lot of fun. I get to *be* Katherine Hepburn for an evening. I've never participated in one of these murder-dinner things before, either as a character or one of the people trying to solve the mystery, so I'm a little nervous, but all I have to do is memorize a few facts about Katherine, find a 30s/40s era dress that looks similar to the one in the pic I was given (it looks red with small white dots, but is very unhelpful in finding the correct style), and enjoying myself at the party. I could be the murderer, or not. No one will know until the end, which I guess helps the murderer act innocent, lol.

I have plenty of time to figure things out, as the thing is on March 24 or thereabouts. And I can get more details tomorrow, or Tuesday, or whenever we're meeting (Lyda Pearl wasn't entirely clear about when this meeting is to take place). It may be more difficult to find a dress and shoes and figure out something about hair, etc. But I'm sure I can find something, somewhere. There are several second-hand stores lurking about and there's always ebay.

Oh I LOVE role playing. I have never done a murder mystery, but I have played one or two role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. It's great, especially when you slip into character and just roll with it.

I haven't done any real role-playing (like D&D) since I was a kid, but I'm hoping my costuming/con attending will help me at least a little. :)

That sounds really fun! And what an easy audition process (although I am sure that the fact that you and LP got roles so easily is because the casting agents intuited your natural talents.)

Good luck finding the perfect outfit!

I was thinking I would have to get a dress, but it being Katherine Hepburn, I may get away with trousers. That would be nice. Then I could have a pair of platforms or really high heels and be a little bit taller, which would also be good. :)

That'll be soooo much fun (for me to watch--haha)!

LP was fantastic a few years ago in another production of the college's. As I recall, that play was put together on short notice (but it didn't show) and was very well received. I have every confidence this one will be just as great--if not better!
=D

Of course, that was an actual play, I believe, with rehearsals and everything. This is a bit more free-form, which YIKES kinda makes me a little nervous. Mingling at parties, which is what we will all be doing, is something I suck at, so I'm just hoping that when I'm pretending to be someone else I'll be better at the mingling bit. :)

wait a minute... wasn't Kate more likely to wear pants? wink

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I may luck out and not have to wear a dress after all. :)

Yeah, I can spend the next month lurking on ebay and hanging out at second hand stores, trying to find something cool. The hope is to find something that actually fits so that I don't have to try to make anything. I'm not in a particularly seamstressy kind of mood. :)

Yeah, it should be interesting to dress-up as a real person for a change, instead of a fictional character from a book or TV show. :)

What a wonderful thing to do. For one evening you get to be the dashing, confident Kate Hepburn. I suspect you could get away with being rather reserved during the mingling parts of the evening. To get in character, you could try Hepburn's daily morning routine of a plunge into the cold lake (ocean, river, creek? Some body of water) outside her house LOL. I think you and LP will both be great.

Hm, maybe I'll just skip that bracing morning swim, especially as the only place I could do it would be in the giant puddle at the end of the driveway, lol.

I do think I'll be able to be a bit standoff-ish if I want, as Kate had a reputation for not being the most easy person to get along with. :)

Ooh, that sounds fun! (Have never done anything like that, but always thought it sounded neat.) Maybe you could get a copy of Kate's autobiography, "Me", from the library/interlibrary loan and check out any pix for fashion ideas?

I checked the autobiography out of the library this afternoon and have already started reading it. Her writing style is very unique, but also very entertaining. There are also a ton of good pics, so I should be able to find something to give me a push in the right direction wardrobe-wise. :)
