It's been a quiet weekend. I read Katherine Hepburn's autobiography. We watched Casablanca last night ([livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl is playing the role of Ingrid Bergman), and I realized that, classic though it is, I don't really like it all that much. Too much 'damsel in distress' crap. I much prefer strong female characters that don't rely on the old 'hand to the forehead, whatever shall I do?' act to get what they want.

I read a good book this week. "My Sister's Keeper," by Jodi Picoult. It's about a family dealing with one daughter who has a very rare form of Leukemia and another daughter who was basically a 'designer baby' created in vitro to be a genetic match for the first daughter. It was very moving and touched on a lot of issues, but the ending was surprisingly tragic.

Now I'm reading The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde. I've only just started it so I don't know how it's going to go, but I liked the other books I've read by him, so I'm expecting it to be entertaining.

Tomorrow is a holiday of sorts. Although I don't get paid, it is nice to get these little three-day weekends from time to time. Hopefully it will be a little warmer tomorrow, as I couldn't bring myself to brave the cold yesterday or today for more than a drive to Dunkin Donuts.

I absolutely agree with you about those movies. I don't like that type of female character either.

Enjoy your day off!

The Casablanca Non-fan club

I was pleased to learn that you and [profile] lyda_pearl had just watched Casablanca for the first time, and that you, at least were underwhelmed. I rented it maybe 4 or 5 years ago. At the time I thought I must be the last American adult alive who had never seen it. The version I rented was some anniversary edition, with a gazillion extra features tacked on at the beginning. I was bored with the whole thing before I even got to the movie (OK, so my fast-forwarding skills are not all they might be). I did feel obligated to watch it, however. I don't really remember anything about it, except that it was sort of a "torn between two lovers" thing, and the supposed great love affair in Paris didn't seem like such hot stuff. No reason to ditch a marriage.

Yeah, all that angst about someone she didn't really know very well, and who was clearly a rebound/substitute for the husband she thought was dead. You'd think by the time she saw him again she'd have managed to put things in perspective, but no, she gets all limp and confused and needs *him* to decide what to do. So lame.

Lucky for you, you are impersonating Katherine Hepburn. Very little limpness there!
