On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl, [livejournal.com profile] whtmtnwmn, Shadow, Ben, Bowie and I did a hike up to Dome Rock.

The first part of the trail is along a very picturesque cascading stream, called Fallsway.

So I took some obligatory pictures of the pretty waterfalls. This one is called Gordon Fall.

I also managed to catch at least one of the dogs swimming, although all three were in the water at one time or another. This one is Bowie, a five-month old yellow lab.

After awhile, the trail crosses the stream and becomes much steeper and rockier.

Ben, another yellow lab, guards the way.

Along the way we came across several ledges or caps of rock, from which we were able to capture absolutely spectacular views.

Shadow wanted to say hello.

By the time we reached the upper ledges, we'd climbed about 1000 feet, and we could see just about forever, even with the cloudy, hazy skies.

Here's a picture of one of the ledges, seen from below. The trail winds up the side of the mountain to the left of and then across the rock faces.

We nearly turned around about five minutes from the top because the skies were so threatening...

...but after resting and having a snack, we decided to persevere and reached the top in short order. Sadly, none of the pics from the top turned out terribly well. After another short rest we headed back down. The climb up took about an hour and forty minutes, and the climb down took one and a half hours, so it was a good, long hike. By the time we reached the Fallsway trail again on the way down, it was starting to rain a bit and by the time we reached the cars, the tops of the mountains were completely enshrouded by heavy, black clouds. It's a good thing we didn't linger longer than we did up there.

It was a great hike, but my knees let me know in no uncertain terms that while climbing the rocks going up is all sorts of fun, climbing back down the rocks sucks big time. I was pretty much crippled all day Sunday, but it was worth it.

Wow. I love your hiking pictures. Will miss them when you move. (Which is a good thing for your goals!) but still...these are great places.

Thanks. I have photos for one more hike, from yesterday, which I'll get up eventually. I hope to find some time for hiking once I get back to Pgh, but the views will certainly be different.

mmm... looks like a nice time. perhaps treking poles for you... they help a ton on decents. ;)

Yeah, I was actually using my poles. My knees just really don't like bending - sometimes just going downstairs can be painful. Luckily the pain goes away within a few hours, a day or two at the most.

Thank you! The two labs belong to [livejournal.com profile] whtmtnwmn and its kinda funny I got a pic of the puppy swimming, because he's pretty much the only one of the crew that doesn't like to swim. :)

Bonus track on the first BNL album, which no coincidentally is titled named, "Gordon." They explain it in the liner notes. Plus they thank everyone they can think of named Gordon.

What a great day you guys had! Thanks for posting those pix. I'm just nuts about those doggies and the pictures were so much fun, especially wee Bo in the water! What breed is Shadow? He looks very much like my friend's black flat-coated retriever mix, all nice and wooly in the flanks and a sweet face (and I love his gray eyebrows!) Big Ben at the top of the trail head would make a great icon. I, too, will miss your pix when you move, but you'll just have to find some goodies in Pgh to share with us. :-)

Shadow is a springer Spaniel, at least her momma was! Her chin and brows have been turning gray just this past year, she's 8. The icon is our other springer, Sundance. She's too lame for tough hikes, but they are both sweeties.
Cheers,
LP

They're beautiful dogs! How fun that they can all get together to play, or hike. And how fun for you guys to be able to enjoy them so.

I really hope I can find some hiking to do once I get back to Pgh. It's a lot harder, because the mountains aren't so immediate and there is so much urban sprawl, but I'm going to make the effort.

Kind of like we have here. On a clear day you can see the mountains in the distance, but it's a good 45 minutes to an hour's drive to get there. We do have several really nice river parks close by, but there's just something about the mountains! Makes my blood pressure lower just thinking about them.
