I made it safely to Pgh (well, Zelie to be more specific) in one piece, on time, with only a few detours.
lyda_pearl and I drove to Boston through pouring rain on Saturday. We stopped at the science museum as we drove into the city, thinking that would be a cool way to spend the afternoon, but alas, we got there after four and they close at five. It didn't seem worth paying the fifteen dollar admission fee for 45 minutes. So we went on and found a hotel, where we promptly ensconced ourselves for the rest of the evening. It was cold and wet out and we opted to not walk around, preferring instead to stay inside where it was warm and dry. So we got our jammies on and watched tv. Very exciting, I know.
Yesterday we drove around a little bit before heading to the airport. We wanted to find a place to eat and wound up in East Boston. After driving aimlessly for a little while we found a great bakery where we had some sort of mexican meat and potato turnover. Mmm, yummy. LP also got a delicious caramel donut (although I don't think she thought it was as yummy as I thought it was).
Detour number one came when we tried to get back onto the road that would take us to the airport. For those of you not familiar with Boston (including me), the airport is right next to East Boston. It's *right there* and we could not get to it. Not to save our lives. We drove around and around and around, but the road our map showed as going directly to the airport loop was blocked off and there was no hope for it. We had to go back into the main city and turn around to get back onto the airport road. How dumb!
After that, though, everything was fine. I always get a little uneasy about check-in when I have an e-ticket, especially this time because I had a really big bag with me, but it was under the weight limit, so it got checked easily and finding the proper gate was easy, and there was pretty much no one at the security gate so that was easy (although they did take my backpack aside and check the straps, etc, for whatever they check for).
I flew from Boston to Newark and at check-in I was offered an earlier flight out of Newark. I was tempted to take it, but it was scheduled for departure half an hour after my Boston flight was scheduled for arrival, which seemed to be cutting it pretty tight. Plus I didn't know if that would work for
eve11, who was picking me up in Pgh. So I stuck with my original plan which was a good thing.
At Newark, the terminal where we landed was on the far side of the airport from the terminal where my connecting flight was and it took that entire half our to get there and get through security, where there was a much longer line this time around. By the time I got to my gate, that earlier flight had already departed.
The plane from Newark to Pgh was tiny tiny. One of those jobs with one seat on one side of the aisle and two seats on the other side. *gulp* For some reason small planes make me much more nervous than large ones, plus we had some turbulence right after takeoff due to continuing crappy weather, so I was a little more stressed during that leg of the flight, but it was fine in the end, made it here safe and sound.
Detour number two was for
eve11 and
uiceboo who came to pick me up. There were detours on the airport route and they unfortunately had a bit of a long and winding journey to reach the airport, but they made it in one piece, which is the only qualifier that really counts.
Once back at Eve 11's place, there was good food, good conversation about many things, and good scifi viewing (this week's Doctor Who). I bought a Sunday paper while at the airport and today I get to start calling around about jobs, apartments etc. Oh the joy!
