I watched a couple of fun movies tonight, Better Off Dead and Grosse Pointe Blank.

Better Off Dead was a hilariously painful reminder of all things bad about the eighties, from the hair to the clothes to the music, and the bizarro world approach to high school was scarily appropriate.

Grosse Pointe Blank, which is about an assassin dealing with his high school ten year reunion, made me realize that I'm actually closer to my twentieth than my tenth h.s. reunion. Yikes! But the movie has a great cast, awesome soundtrack (and, you know, lots of mayhem and blood and violence) and is lotsa fun.

Well, it's after midnight and I'm supposed to get up early to go jogging of all things. Yep, I'm giving the running another try. Despite the fact that it's on the road (ouchie painful hard unyielding surface) I'm feeling surprisingly good and the sore shins I had from trekking around town last week have even gone away. Wow!

Yeesh! Lyda, you even had me beat! But if you'd called me at 3:38 am, we could have chatted.

What's up with that? Are you not sleeping?

Q. who needs sleep?

A. Never gonna get it.

I had a distasteful meeting til 6 yesterday and I couldn't sleep. I finished reading The Rope Eater and that was diverting until 5 minutes after I finished it. So I got up and looked for jobs and filled out two apps online to reassure myself that I can always go somewhere else. I have a real strong "Run Away" instinct.

That sounds unfun. What's going on?

Grr! I wish I was on a machine that had IM so we could talk.

It's got raisins in it. You like raisins.

That's how the whole movie marathon thing came about yesterday - I was drooling over a Chunky bar at the store, R made the raisin comment, I didn't get it and then when she mentioned to D that I hadn't seen the movie, he also made the raisin comment, lol.

Heh! Franch toast, Franch dressing, Franch fries...
Actually, my favorite double feature from that era is Better Off Dead followed with Real Genius!

I loved Grosse Point Blank! It was so funny and strange and - well, John Cusack was in it (to say nothing of wrote and produced it) - need I say more? *wipes drool off lower lip*

*hands you napkin to clean yourself up*

I've always liked John Cusack, but somehow, I rarely actually watch the movies he makes. Go figure.

Well, I never could get myself really into Being John Malkovich, despite all the press about it being so brilliant, but other than that I've pretty much seen everything he's been in since 1990 or so.
They tend to be movies you have to be in the right mood for.

As I told WWC, I like John Cusack, too. But for some reason I've not seen many of his movies. They're usually pretty good, but there's always something else I want to see more, or something. Now I'm starting to get caught up with all the dvds, though, so it's a good thing. :D

He was in a movie that ended up being called "money for nothing" or something like that, which filmed in north oakland one winter when I lived over on Maripoe. I don't think it was the same winter that you were there (and that we were hiking over mounds of snow together every day) but I do remember walking past the set outside the Luna Bar for what seemed like months. I think this is for a two second scene in the film.

c'mon, are you really going to tell me that the 80's were worse than any other decade? I mean everyone thought the beehive was the worst hair ever until the B-52's made it camp :D

"Tree Trimmer: Now that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy like that."

heh, John's roughly my age, and played lotsa bad luck, so I identified a lot with that... :D and I still have a tremendous crush on his sister... so I've always liked his movies a bunch. The sure thing was good too...;)

Oh, the eighties weren't any worse than any other era. I was laughing while watching the movie at first because I thought it was filmed later and the worst aspects of 80s style had been chosen. Then I realized it was actually from '85 and they were trying to pick the 'coolest' looks of the day when they filmed it, lol.

The lady who sang for the band during the dance scene was possibly the worst. As [livejournal.com profile] eve11 said, she looked like she was wearing a Stegosaurus hide.

I always liked that one.

My sister had a beehive. Then again, this is (eyeroll) my sister we're talking about, so, go fig.

Reunions

My 25th COLLEGE reunion is going to be next weekend - OUCH, CLUNK, BANG - yes those are the sounds of me crashing into the wall of age. A couple of weeks age it occurred to me that I'm not just past the first bloom of youth, I'm also past the first sag of middle age. Fortunately, I amused myself so much by coining that phrase that I feel very young and smart. Anyway, I'm not going to that reunion. I'm just going to be glad to be at home and reunited with my pets after my first trip away from Oxford.

I see very little point in reunions. I don't imagine I'll be going to any of them, either high school or college. But then, I wasn't at the high school long enough to make any friends and because of my interdisciplinary studies major, I don't have a group of people that I graduated with that I'd like to see again. So no real urge to go back.

I was going to ask if "Better Off Dead" was the movie where "I want my two dollars" came from, but I see from other comments that it is. Very handy to quote, in that tone, if a relative actually owes you two dollars.

I like John Cusack, although I tend to get him and Jon Cryer mixed up in their filmographies (short, slightly odd guys with dark hair...). I have problems telling New England authors John Irving and John Updike apart, too. Now, *Joan* Cusack I like, and I always know which one she is, LOL.

While I've never had a problem keeping Jon Cryer and John Cusack straight, I know what you mean, lol.

Cryer v Cusack
