Scientist Bootcamp Training Log - Week One, day five
"What does this button do?"
"God, McKay, just put the P-90 down and listen. Can you do that?"
"Fine. I was just asking, no need to get all stressed about it."
"Now, as I was saying..."
"Does anybody have a powerbar? I haven't eaten in hours."
"Lunch was forty-five minutes ago Rodney, but here. I wouldn't want you to faint from hunger in the middle of learning how to keep from being killed by the Wraith!
"Oh, please! If and when the Wraith attack, I'm going to be far too busy saving the day to worry about how to use a gun. And I thought we agreed that the correct term was 'pass out.'
"You know what, you're right, why should you be able to defend yourself? When we run into the Wraith offworld, just talk at them. That should slow them down enough for you to run away, and then the rest of us won't be endangered by your complete inability to handle a weapon."
"Off world?"
"Off world, McKay. What - did you think the Wraith would just sit back and leave us alone while we make new friends and sing songs in the daisy patch?
"Very funny, Major. This is me, laughing hysterically at your oh so funny joke. Fine. Getting back to the point. What does this button do?"

Elizabeth stopped the video and closed the laptop, unable to control the smile that twitched at the corners of her lips. Laptop in hand, she headed to the infirmary.
'I'm sorry, John," she said as she approached the colonel, held reluctant prisoner by Dr. Beckett. "I couldn't find the files you wanted but I found something else I thought you might want to see." Setting the laptop next to him, she opened the pertinent file.
John watched in silence for a moment before looking up, a smile hovering somewhere in the vicinity of his eyes although the broken jaw (courtesy of an off-world mission gone wrong - again) which Beckett had just wired shut prevented much expression from showing anywhere else.

"Hey, McKay, good news." Sheppard called as he swung into the lab. "Beckett cleared me for offworld duty. We've got a mission briefing at 0800 tomorrow."
"Yay. See me being all excited?" McKay grumbled. "I'm in the middle of running some very sensitive simulations here, Colonel." The scientist turned back to his computer dismissively.
Nothing daunted, Sheppard perched himself on McKay's desk. "Whatcha working on?"
With a sigh, McKay looked back at the colonel and decided that answering his questions was the quickest way to get rid of him and get back to productive work. "A prototype for a larger version of Ronon's gun. As a cannon with stun and lethal settings it could be very useful." Warming to his subject, McKay handed Sheppard a model and went on at length about the modifications he and Zelenka had made.
"Cool," Sheppard murmurred. "What does this button do?"
"There aren't any... Give me that!" McKay grabbed the weapon and glared until Sheppard got the hint and wandered off, looking inexplicably smug. Turning back to his desk, McKay was surprised to find a box of powerbars sitting next to his computer, with a sticky note attached. Thanks for saving my life.
"He is the weirdest person," McKay mused, ripping open the wrapper on one of the bars, peanut butter chocolate - his favorite. Shrugging, he returned to his work, doing his best to rid his face of the smile he knew lurked there. It would never do for his minions to see him happy. He'd lose all control around here.
