Jun. 6th, 2006 11:20 amIt's been a crazy several days but I'm mostly moved in and unpacked now.
Much as I've been looking forward to having my own place again, it's a big adjustment, after having someone around to talk to nearly all the time for the past three years, to suddenly be entirely alone all day again. Especially since I still don't have internet access at home. (I'm at the library today and at the mercy of the timer.) It leaves me feeling more cut off than I like, but it's only temporary. I should have my dsl equipment by the end of this week or the beginning of next. I can last a week without home internet, right?
lyda_pearl arrived Friday afternoon. She called me when she was about an hour out, and immediately after she called it started to pour. It rained heavily all afternoon and by the time she arrived and we were ready to unload all of my belongings out of the car there were rivers at the sides of the road. Nothing daunted, we made about ten trips up and down the stairs and got all my stuff in before heading out to K-mart to buy more stuff (household supplies). The problem with sharing a household (and getting rid of practically everything when you move into your sister's house) is that when it's time to move back into your own place, you don't have anything.
Saturday we got up early, stopped at a local coffee shop, where LP scalded her hand with hot coffee (the boy at the counter barely acknowledged it - you'd think the peole working there would show a little more concern for one of their customers possibly being seriously injured). After that exciting start to the day, we headed out to IKEA. We were only there for about two hours, but it felt like a full day. We walked through the entire store two or three times picking out a desk, swivel chair, sofa, coffee table and shelving unit, all of which we needed to get home in our car, and all of which required assembly once we got home.
We managed to get everything into and out of the car (well, one box got strapped to the roof) and we even got everything up several flights of very narrow stairs. After a brief rest we started in on putting everything together and managed to finish up by six-thirty or seven o'clock. Not bad for one day.
We weren't done yet, though.
eve11 and D came over with the loft bed frame and then we headed out to PNC Park to take in a Pirates game. The game was scheduled to start at 7:05 and we didn't leave my apartment until something like 7:30, but there was a rousing thunderstorm just as we arrived at the ballpark, which caused a rain delay. We were able to find parking, get tickets, buy food, etc all before the game started sometime around 8:45.
I haven't been to a baseball game in about eleven years and it was a lot of fun. Most of the action occurred in the first inning with the Padres scoring three runs and the Pirates getting five runs. They got another run in the second inning and that was it as far as scoring went. It got a little bit interesting again in the ninth inning when the Pirates started to look a little tired and several Padres got hits, but a double play by the Pirates ended the game satisfactorily for us.
Sunday was another busy day. After putting the loft bed together (and thank goodness Lyda Pearl was still here, because I didn't have a clue how to do it) and a trip to the grocery store, LP had to leave, heading to Harrisburg on the first leg of her long trip home. I spent the rest of the day unpacking and getting things set up the way I wanted them. I like the furniture I got - a small sofa that pulls out into a twin futon bed, a tiny little coffee table, a good computer desk (not the cheap one I was planning to get, but one that's a little more functional). I didn't get a dresser as all the ones they had at IKEA were crap, but I got a shelving unit that is made up of 12"x12" cubbies. It seems to work pretty well for the same purpose.
Yesterday I did nothing. I sat on the sofa and watched Farscape, all day. I figured I had earned a day of rest. I also figured out the voice mail on my phone so that today I could leave the house in the knowledge that if I get a call about that job I applied for, I will be able to retrieve the message.
Now I'm off to read as much of my flist as I can before getting kicked off the computer.

Sounds like you've made good progress, and I'm sure it's nice to be able to put things together like you want in the apartment. Baseball game sounds fun, too.

Date: 2006-06-06 04:25 pm (UTC)The kitties must have been very happy to have you back? What do they think of the new place?
Yes, rest up and prepare for the next leg of this journey--employment! Hope you hear something (positive) soon.

Date: 2006-06-06 04:39 pm (UTC)The kitties are adapting pretty well to the new place. They're so funny. Thor hid in the closet for a couple of hours on Friday, and he still goes there and hides whenever he hears something out in the hall that frightens him (people walking by, voices, etc). Tookie explored the entire apartment right off the bat, making her 'I don't like this' meows for a little while, and then she settled down. At least as much as she ever settles down. She's fine during the day, but because I've got a loft bed now, she can't sleep with me at night (too old and arthritic to get up the ladder). Both nights that I've slept up there, she's freaked out around 3 am, yowling and prowling around, as if she can't find me. I'm pretty sure she knows where I am, but she gets stressed anyway. I think she'll stop after a few nights of it, but in the meantime, I'm afraid she's disturbing everyone in the building - she has a penetrating voice when she's in full swing.

Date: 2006-06-06 08:52 pm (UTC)Actually, about 8 years. You and I went to see the Pirates get beat by the Astros just before I left to move to Texas. I still have the Pirates cap I bought then somewhere - but it's too dusty to wear because for a long time I stored it in the same closet in which I kept the litter box! (So, word to the wise, keep your litter box far away from your new Ikea cubbies!)
Speaking of kitties, how have yours adjusted to the new place? All that moving stuff in and assembling it must have meant quite a lot of extra time for them in the cat carriers after the long drive from NH!
It's great that you are back to LJ. You might have noticed that without you and LP around to inspire me, I haven't posted much of anything in the past week.
