Red-tailed hawk
Aug. 20th, 2008 08:28 pmWe've got one of these beauties living in the neighborhood where I work (not this one in particular, though - one of these days I'll actually have my camera with me when he's around).

We've seen him a couple of times on the playground across the street from school. One day sitting on a branch overhanging the playground. Today he was soaring in circles over the school and across the street, screaming that very distinctive hawk scream (again, sadly, not my photo). It's kind of amazing how red it's tail really is, even when seen at a bit of a distance it's unmistakable.

He's quite distracting. I just wanted to set myself down and watch him, instead of paying attention to the kids - I see them all the time, after all, and this is the first time I've actually seen a hawk circling around like that, or heard one in real life. Very cool.
