so slow costuming!

Ahhhhhhh! I hope the coat part of this costume goes quicker than the bodice/corset thing is. It is taking forever. Yesterday I got the shoulder straps and the zipper basted onto the outer shell and finished putting the lining pieces together. Tonight I have to get the boning in and then put a few darts in so it actually fits. I know the boning part takes forever, so this might carry me through the rest of the week.

The head piece is done, at least, except for painting, which must be done over the weekend. The main piece looks really good and seems to fit just right. Sadly, I had to totally estimate how to make the back piece since I didn't have anything to build it up on, and it won't work at all. This means somehow creating a hood to wear under the other piece, that I can just paint to look bark-like. Not at all ideal, but there is no way I'll have time to make a new mold and pour a new back piece before Dragon Con. That will just have to wait until another time (I do intend to finish it up properly at some point though).

I managed to cross something off the to-do list today, without adding anything new onto it. This feels like an accomplishment. It was a near thing, too. I pulled out my boning and realized I'd somehow bought 1/2 inch uncased boning, instead of 1/4 inch cased. I flailed about for a couple minutes thinking this might be a deal breaker (there's really not going to be any more trips to Joann's between now and Dragon Con) and then pulled myself together and started sorting through my leftovers bins. It's a good thing I always buy far too much of everything, because I managed to scrounge up some of the appropriate boning from 2011 when I made the bustier for Steampunk Five. There was just enough to do the front, curvy seams, and then I made casing for the wider stuff to do the straight back seams. It's not pretty but I think it will work. And that's the boning done for another costume. I should try to plan for next costume to NOT involve boning, I think.
