Impeccable timing
Jun. 22nd, 2006 05:36 pmIt was cloudy and threatening when I left the apartment this morning so I made sure I had an umbrella tucked inside my bag. I nearly beat the rain to work but when it hit, it hit hard, with thunder and lightning. From zero to downpour in three seconds flat, by the time I got my umbrella out I was already wet, and it was raining hard enough that the umbrella only really protected my head anyway - once at work I found my legs covered in mud and grime that had been thrown up by the force of the rain.
It stopped raining by midmorning and we were able to play outside with the kids all day. Just as I was getting ready to head home it started to look a bit dark and threatening and I was only about twenty minutes into my walk, with a long section of road running under overhanging trees ahead, when it started thundering. I can deal with thunder and lightning perfectly well when I'm inside and it's outside. But when I'm outside with it, especially in woody areas, I get...well, scared. Yes, I'm a coward. So I practically sprinted the last twenty-five minutes of the walk, keeping one ear open for thunder and one eye over my shoulder at the ominous black clouds following me. Once again, I nearly made it. Only a block to go when the skies opened and it began to rain and the lightning seemed to be making a play for my neighborhood.
It's still really, really dark outside and the thunder is grumbly, but it doesn't seem inclined, at the moment, to be right on top of me. Which is a good thing.

Date: 2006-06-23 05:29 pm (UTC)Yowch! That's a lot of lightning. Luckily the storm never got too violent here and most of the thunder remained just a dull rumble.

Date: 2006-06-23 05:25 pm (UTC)I have a really good raincoat, but it's just too hot and humid to wear it in the summer - on Monday I wore it and was soaking wet from sweat by the time I got to work. I don't mind getting wet, really, it's just the lightning that makes me nervous.

Date: 2006-06-23 04:44 pm (UTC)And your description of your day - *pats you to make you feel better* - made me think "hmmm, sounds like a fic she needs to write." More Luster soon? Anything? Oh, how about Carsonfic? And how many more weeks do we have to wait for new Friday SciFi anyway?
Hope today is better! *hugs*

Date: 2006-06-23 05:31 pm (UTC)I hope your poor flowers and herbs survive the dry weather.
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten your Carson fic. I've started it two or three different times but I haven't found the right story for it yet. It's coming, though.
Scifi Friday starts up anew on July 14th, so less than a month to go. I'm going to miss it, though. Can't afford the cable right now. *sigh* I've had some luck downloading episodes but the last few times I've tried I haven't been able to get anything, so I'm a little worried.

Did you ever get to see the finale of Doctor Who? *siiiiiiigh* Last Friday they ran four eps back to back and I was in Who Heaven!

Date: 2006-06-24 02:17 am (UTC)I was able to download the first few episodes of the second season of Doctor Who, but I haven't been able to grab the season one finale. :( I'll keep trying, though. It's bound to come up good sooner or later.
