It was cloudy and threatening when I left the apartment this morning so I made sure I had an umbrella tucked inside my bag. I nearly beat the rain to work but when it hit, it hit hard, with thunder and lightning. From zero to downpour in three seconds flat, by the time I got my umbrella out I was already wet, and it was raining hard enough that the umbrella only really protected my head anyway - once at work I found my legs covered in mud and grime that had been thrown up by the force of the rain.

It stopped raining by midmorning and we were able to play outside with the kids all day. Just as I was getting ready to head home it started to look a bit dark and threatening and I was only about twenty minutes into my walk, with a long section of road running under overhanging trees ahead, when it started thundering. I can deal with thunder and lightning perfectly well when I'm inside and it's outside. But when I'm outside with it, especially in woody areas, I get...well, scared. Yes, I'm a coward. So I practically sprinted the last twenty-five minutes of the walk, keeping one ear open for thunder and one eye over my shoulder at the ominous black clouds following me. Once again, I nearly made it. Only a block to go when the skies opened and it began to rain and the lightning seemed to be making a play for my neighborhood.

It's still really, really dark outside and the thunder is grumbly, but it doesn't seem inclined, at the moment, to be right on top of me. Which is a good thing.

You can work out which direction a storm is moving. If the amount of time between lightening and thunder is getting longer then the storm is moving away, and if it is getting shorter then the storm is getting closer. If there is not much different then it is right on top of you or beside you.

I'm not good enough at concentrating to really scientifically count out the seconds like that, although I'm familiar with the method. But weather patterns here are very predictable and the storm was definitely moving in my direction. Luckily, it never got really violent, so it turned out not to be so bad.

you aren't planning a trip to a ball-game tonight are you?
From: [identity profile] auntiemeesh.livejournal.com
I'm not due for another ball game for at least six or seven years.

Yowch! That's a lot of lightning. Luckily the storm never got too violent here and most of the thunder remained just a dull rumble.

Poor Auntiemeesh! I may have to send you the special rain gear that LP sent to me when I was having long daily walks to and from work in the rain. It won't protect you from lightning, but would help keep you dry!

I have a really good raincoat, but it's just too hot and humid to wear it in the summer - on Monday I wore it and was soaking wet from sweat by the time I got to work. I don't mind getting wet, really, it's just the lightning that makes me nervous.

I certainly sympathize with that sentiment! Just be sure you wear rubber-soled shoes - and get yourself safely inside as soon as you can on those lightning-y days!

Yeah, that's where the 45-50 min walk becomes a bit of a drag; when the storm hits I'm still really, really far away from being safely inside, sometimes.

Girl, I wish you'd send some of that rain down here! We're so dry there was actually a brush fire on the road outside my office yesterday. The weather folks keep saying "pop up showers" but so far none of them have popped up at my house. The poor grass is as brittle as straw, the herbs and flowers are hanging in there only because I lug the watering can around morning and evening and give them all a drink (mandatory watering ban around here - yeah, it's summer!). I sure could use a nice, rainy day at home. And my garden would LOVE it!

And your description of your day - *pats you to make you feel better* - made me think "hmmm, sounds like a fic she needs to write." More Luster soon? Anything? Oh, how about Carsonfic? And how many more weeks do we have to wait for new Friday SciFi anyway?

Hope today is better! *hugs*

*sends rain your way*

I hope your poor flowers and herbs survive the dry weather.

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten your Carson fic. I've started it two or three different times but I haven't found the right story for it yet. It's coming, though.

Scifi Friday starts up anew on July 14th, so less than a month to go. I'm going to miss it, though. Can't afford the cable right now. *sigh* I've had some luck downloading episodes but the last few times I've tried I haven't been able to get anything, so I'm a little worried.

Well, if you want, I can always tape them and send them your way if you want to send me your new addy. I imagine I'll just be taping on Fridays from 8 straight on through midnight.

Loving the Carson icon! He's such a cutie-pie, I do hope they give him a more meaty role this season.

Did you ever get to see the finale of Doctor Who? *siiiiiiigh* Last Friday they ran four eps back to back and I was in Who Heaven!

If you could tape them for me that would be awesome. At least until I get the whole downloading thing figured out.

I was able to download the first few episodes of the second season of Doctor Who, but I haven't been able to grab the season one finale. :( I'll keep trying, though. It's bound to come up good sooner or later.

I've already decided I'm going to have to buy the set. It took a little while for me to get "Who'd" but now that I am I want to see every single ep, not just the ones SF decides to repeat every once in a while.

Oooh, just saw Orli on Leno. He is such a ... such a ... yum. Hoo boy. So damned pretty! Not Viggo pretty or Billy pretty or Dom pretty just SO DAMNED PRETTY! Put Orli and Liv Tyler in a room together and the eyes could just plain explode with all that BEAUTY!

Oh, and we got RAIN this evening! Not a whole lot but all the herbs and flowers and grass practically stood up and danced! Supposed to rain off and on the next four days. Guess that means we get to cut the grass next week. Oh, I don't care! It's so good to get some of that wet stuff again!

This spring, in New Hampshire, it was very dry until about three days before I moved away, but since I left it's done nothing but rain. My sister has to cut the grass every time the sun comes out for ten minutes straight, lol.

She needs to hook the mower up to Big Ben and Wee Bo and let them cut the grass for her. Now there's a visual image! Hee, hee! :-)

The right idea finally came to me this morning and I got it written and posted here (http://auntiemeesh.livejournal.com/207139.html). It's Teyla pov but it's Carson!fic. I hope you like. :)
