Most Wanted List
Sep. 5th, 2006 10:35 pmWanted: one book titled "Discovering Computers: Fundamentals, 2006."
Purchased: one book titled "Discovering Computers, 2006." Not quite the same thing, although the two books look pretty much identical.
Action taken: Book returned to the campus book store in an effort to make an exchange. This attempt resulted in a partial success. The unwanted book was returned but the desired book remains elusive.
Further action taken: A trip to the SIS library was made, in the hopes of finding the wanted book being held on reserve. This attempt resulted in complete failure and some laughter - upon receiving a request for DC: F, the librarian pulled DC off the shelves and handed it over. Mistake was realized shortly after I sat down to read the first three chapters. The library's copy of DC:F is on order but has not arrived yet.
Conclusion drawn: It's not my fault that I won't have the readings done for class on Thursday, considering there is not a single copy of the book to be had anywhere on campus.
In other news, I've come to the conclusion that I definitely don't want to get into the field of conservation of archival materials. Far too much chemistry required. Today I read articles on copying pencils (which included all sorts of chemical formulas and names that make my head ache) and Iron Gall Ink Corrosion (which was also using far too many chemical terms and formulas for my peace of mind). I know I have to have a basic understanding of the issues of preservation in order to be an good archivist, but I'm glad I'm not the one that's going to be doing the conserving of materials. *sighs in relief*
