Wanted: one book titled "Discovering Computers: Fundamentals, 2006."

Purchased: one book titled "Discovering Computers, 2006." Not quite the same thing, although the two books look pretty much identical.

Action taken: Book returned to the campus book store in an effort to make an exchange. This attempt resulted in a partial success. The unwanted book was returned but the desired book remains elusive.

Further action taken: A trip to the SIS library was made, in the hopes of finding the wanted book being held on reserve. This attempt resulted in complete failure and some laughter - upon receiving a request for DC: F, the librarian pulled DC off the shelves and handed it over. Mistake was realized shortly after I sat down to read the first three chapters. The library's copy of DC:F is on order but has not arrived yet.

Conclusion drawn: It's not my fault that I won't have the readings done for class on Thursday, considering there is not a single copy of the book to be had anywhere on campus.

In other news, I've come to the conclusion that I definitely don't want to get into the field of conservation of archival materials. Far too much chemistry required. Today I read articles on copying pencils (which included all sorts of chemical formulas and names that make my head ache) and Iron Gall Ink Corrosion (which was also using far too many chemical terms and formulas for my peace of mind). I know I have to have a basic understanding of the issues of preservation in order to be an good archivist, but I'm glad I'm not the one that's going to be doing the conserving of materials. *sighs in relief*

We have a brilliant section in our University Library where copies of books that are commonly on reading lists are shelved, but can not leave the section, or can only leave for a short space of time. The result is there is a nine times out of ten possibility that any book I need will either be there, or be ready within a couple of hours.

Maybe your library has a similar system.

We have the same system here. Those are the books on reserve, but unfortunately, in this instance, the book they have on reserve is the DC, rather than the DC:F - the library has ordered it, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Somehow I'm glad I'm not on the road to be a librairian after all.

I need to just keep reminding myself how much I love books, etc. Just because they are outrageously expensive and practically impossible to procure doesn't mean I won't love them once I get them. *nods determinedly*

Perhaps you can start writing book conservationist fic to amuse yourself - how about "The Man in the Iron Gall Ink Mask"? Sounds exciting to me!

Once upon a time there was a man whose face was hidden from the world. It was covered over with a lovely blue-black ink mask. However, alas, the work was done with iron gall ink, the man was now in tremendous pain as the ink slowly ate the skin off his face. Doctors were puzzled as to how to treat this condition and lamented the fact that the work had been done with such a destructive ink. The end.

I think I came across many things where I felt the same with your realisation that you don't have to venture too far in conservation. This is why this is such a great and versatile profession: enough to specialise in!
