Well, as always, a good night's sleep goes far to fix my mood. I'm still frustrated with the grade I got yesterday The grade was broken down into points for each specific point that we were supposed to cover and then a last category on readability. I'd been worried that I hadn't covered the topic properly, but I got full points for all of that. I did, however, only get 1 out of 3 points for readability, but the only problem marked was two semi-colons, one of which I'm really pretty sure was appropriately used. To me, if she's going to mark my paper as nearly unreadable, there should be a little more explanation than that. The paper's only worth 15 pts to begin with, so this is the difference between an A and a B, which is a significant difference.

eugh.... really? I know writing papers is completely different from writing stories, but still. Keep us posted how the talk goes.

I still need to talk to the professor, but I'm feeling less down about it now. 24 hrs perspective makes a big difference.

Good luck with your prof. Hope she realizes she's made a horrible mistake and gives you your due. *fingers crossed*

That would be nice, but even just an explanation of what was wrong would satisfy me.

Actually, it sounds like you did really well on that paper!

From the other side of the fence, I've definitely graded papers coarsely like that before, and the coarse point structure makes it really hard to get a perfect score. But on the grader's side of things, it makes it a lot easier to grade a lot of papers. It's hard to write comments on all papers esp. if there's a lot of them, so the absolute best thing you can do is to go talk to the prof about your score. Good luck!

Well, considering that a B is the bare minimum required to pass the course, I'm not so happy, but I didn't mess up on the stuff I was worried about messing up on so that's good, at least.

Why would two semi-colons make a paper unreadable?

My question exactly. I suppose her philosophy was a point off for each mistake, but when there's only three points available, that seems a little harsh, especially when she didn't give us any warning that she was a grammar nazi.

wow. even I would not take off one whole point out of 15 no matter how egregiously someone had misused semi-colons. having read lots of student papers I find it hard to believe that yours would only warrant 1 out of 3 points for readability.

Meaning "1 whole point out of 15" for each alleged misuse of a semi-colon. But not even one for both, really.

Yeah, I really need to make myself email her and find a time to talk to her about it and find out if there was anything else wrong that she just didn't comment on.

By the way, I've been meaning to ask you what your turn around time is for grading papers? One of my profs has been holding on to our papers for over three weeks now, and we had a second one due today without getting the first one back.

I strive for one class period (Both my classes meet 3 days a week). But for papers where I need to give detailed comments so that students can revise the papers it is usually one week.

I got a score for another paper today, finally. This is the first paper for the IT class (the one that was five pages, single spaced) that we turned in almost a month ago. I did better on this one, getting 18 out of 20, which counts as an A-, I believe. And there was enough of an explanation attached to the grade (we haven't actually got the papers back yet) to satisfy me that the grade was appropriate. So I'm feeling a tiny bit better on that score.

I'm glad to know you're feeling better. It does help to know what you might change to get a better score on the next one! Congrats on the A (90% sounds like the real thing to me!)
