I'm sorry to be clogging up some of your flists but I'm posting this here as well as at my other blog.

They wandered through the devastation of the city, trying to suppress the panic that was floating right under the surface. This had been their home, the center of the kingdom. Now it was little more than rubble. The enemy had not been satisfied with toppling the government. They had eradicated every trace of it. How the destruction had been accomplished so thoroughly, was hard to say. All of the central buildings, including the Palace, had been leveled. Rubble was everywhere.

Celine and Jarin were clinging to the hope that their parents had made it out of the city before the destruction began, but this was like trying hang an elephant by a thread. Their father would never have abandoned the city while it was under attack. He would have marshalled the army, which would have stood to the last man, defending the King and Queen.

There were tunnels that led out of the palace into various hiding holes in the city and surrounding countryside. Celine held out a last faint hope that their mother, at least, might have made us of one of these tunnels. If so, she was hiding herself well, for they had been able to glean no hint of any survivors.

Despite the destruction, there were still people living here. Rude huts and shacks had been built up amongst the debris, and a market of sorts was in operation. Farmers and villagers from the surrounding areas still came here to trade their goods, meager though they were. It had been easy to slip into the city. After their travels the past months, they no longer looked the least noble. Dressed in clothing that had been patched many times, with a worn and wearly look about them, no one had recognized the son and daughter of the former rulers.

"Come, Jarin," Celine took her brother's arm, "we'll find nothing to help us here. Let's return to the others."

Celine was the queen now, even if she only had four subjects she could count on, and Jarin deferred to her. He wanted to stay and continue to dig through the rubble, searching for something, anything, that would help him deal with this. Celine was right, though. It was time to go. Forcing down the sobs that were threatening to choke him, he turned his back on his home and made his way over the rubble.

Right, I'm off to write some 'Courage' or maybe some Sprog!fic. Whatever floats across my conciousness first.

Well, I have to tell you that, sadly, I ended up working on sprog!fic last night, although it is really pretty sprogless at the moment. But to set your mind at rest, I'll tell you that today, my priorities are to finish chapter seven before I allow myself to turn once more to sprogless!fic. And in case you are even the weensist bit curious about what sprog!fic is, I will eventually (hopefully within the next few days) be posting it to my other journal ([livejournal.com profile] erpjirl).
