I'm watching my Doctor Who dvds today (9th Doctor). I just saw Dalek (1x06), which is the only episode I missed when it was shown on SciFi.

Christopher Eccleston gives an amazing performance in the episode. Up till here, the Doctor's only showed hints of his rage and grief but he loses his control when confronting the Dalek, and later with Rose he looks so lost and confused. And just like in the Runaway Bride, he needs someone to stop him, here. To help him not become the monster he could so easily be. Rose steps between him and the Dalek, saving the Doctor more than the poor, doomed creature that is the Dalek.

And poor, foolish Doctor, trying so hard all the way along to convince himself that he doesn't need or want anyone, while clinging so hard to Rose. She's his lifeline. She pulls him out of the chaos of a lose too big even for a Time Lord to withstand alone and she anchors him, grounds him to something approaching humanity. Not actual humanity because he isn't human, but something close. He loves her for it, even if he doesn't understand or won't admit it until very late in the game.

Anyway, I'm just babbling now, so I'll shut up and go watch more.

I really regretted that Eccleston only wanted to do one season. I would like to have seen one more with him. He was able to convey a lot of depth and seriousness while still accessing the giddy silliness. I like Tennant all right, but I sometimes want to yell, "Ack! Stop with the faces!"

I regretted Eccleston leaving as well. He was such a good Doctor and I was all prepared to find the adjustment to Tennant difficult, but I had no trouble, turns out. He's totally different, obviously, but I love his interpretation just as much. I think he uses that rubber face of his to hide behind, to distract everyone from what he's really thinking or feeling. The thing that I like most about Tennant, though, is that when he does stop with the faces, when he stills down a bit and lets us see the genuine emotion, it's just that much more powerful.
