It's a perfect spring day today. Warm, with the threat of rain and thunderstorms. I'm hoping the rain holds off long enough to get the kids outside this morning.

After firmly stating my intention to not do comics last night, because I had to babysit, I cancelled babysitting. Too tired to deal with very small children that I had never actually met before. Got home and also realized I was too tired to deal with peanut butter and jelly, so ended up calling [livejournal.com profile] eve11 for a ride, and hanging out with the FCG after all. I'm glad I went, as it seemed like just about everyone was there and it's been awhile since that's happened.

I feel like an imposter but I really need to start training myself to get comfortable in clothing a little more professional than what I wear to the daycare center (i.e. ripped jeans and turtleneck sweaters/faded tee-shirts depending on season). The specific reason for today (despite being at daycare today) is that I'm getting my hair cut this evening after class and I've been told that if I show up at this place looking like I usually do, they won't give me very much attention or make any effort to give me a good cut. But if I dress up a little more, they'll be nicer to me. Very snobby, but it's a free cut so I won't complain and I'll put a little effort into my wardrobe for once. Two of my classmates have gone there and really liked the treatment they received and the haircut they got, and I'm desperate to get my hair under control. At the moment, it's in a very outgrown cut, it's half wavy and half straight, depending on something arcane like moon cycles or the alignment of stars or something, and I can do nothing with it. Maybe I'll finally get the cut that makes it all fall into place. *doesn't hold breath*

I've been having interesting dreams the past couple of nights. Last night, [livejournal.com profile] eve11 accidently killed some people by saying some secret words they were never meant to hear. Therefore, we had to go on the run. It was kinda fun except for the time when she drove off the road and nearly ran us over a cliff into a lake. Then, in the next dream, I had to go shopping to find the perfect fairy princess dress (clearly been spending too much time with four year old girls). The shopkeeper was psychotically scared that I was going to ruin her wares by touching them, though, so it was difficult to try things on. The night before, I dreamed that I was hanging out with the SG-1 gang. Cam and Vala had gotten married somewhere along the way, and they were happily shacked up with Daniel (poor Sam was nowhere to be seen). Cam had left the SGC, however, and Vala had been put in charge of SG-1. We were all hanging out at a playground and I was impressing myself with a newfound ability to do chin-ups.

I wish I didn't have to dress like a grownup for work - for years I worked at tech marketing companies (in the side of the house that didn't have to deal with clients) and I could wear jeans and t-shirts every day. But my last few jobs (elementary school teacher, adult ed teacher, client-side-marketing person) have required actual... non-jeans. It's sort of horrible. I've started sneaking jeans in here and there at my marketing job now - we're closing in a few months, so I don't have to impress anyone except my boss. And he already likes me, thank god.

Hope the hair woes are sorted today. I had a dream the other night that I had to have my hair done for a ball (seriously, and I'm not even hanging around four-year-old girls), and the women doing it were giving everyone AWFUL, '80s big-hair hair-dos. *shudder*

I've been doing the jeans thing for years and it's convenient, but I don't actually like the way most jeans fit me, while, unexpectedly, I was able to find dress slacks that fit pretty easily, plus, they're comfy. Now I just need to work on finding comfy, well-fitting, shirts to match. :)

Gosh, maybe that's why hairdressers love to insult me - they just don't think I'm dressed well enough. Even so, they expect tips - sheesh! Hope the haircut was worth the professional dressiness!

I think the visit as a whole was worth the dressiness. Only time will tell if the hair cut itself holds up when I do it on my own.

Accidentally? Aw, you're so sweet. ;)

I hate dreams where I go on the run. I've had quite a few of them. Sorry about the driving thing; I guess I do drive like a bit of a maniac, hate to inflict it on you in your dreams as well as waking!

Wow what a customer service: dress classy and our customer service improves as well. Hmm... I wonder how that will work in a library ;)

I used to work in companies, so there was always a dress code and casual friday and as I jokingly called it: suit monday. It was hard to change that when I started to work at the hospital. There my colleagues came to work in jeans and a sweater, I still stuck to the business clothing (well if you have the clothes already..). I also did do a lot of audits, workshop and presentations so yeah. Only later when I was expecting Kevin I was very relieved that I could start to wear comfy sweaters and such. ^-^

And you have weird dreams LOL Although the last dream, how cool is that!

I have no idea if there was more to the story than simply the clothes my friend was wearing on the two different occasions she went to this place. It's possible it was also busier the first time she was there, when she was dressed down more.

I must admit, I enjoy my weird dreams a lot more than the ones that more closely imitate real life. Luckily I don't have those very often. :)

Sam? She's cohabbing with Jack and Teal'c.

I love how you describe the perfect spring day. I am actually looking forward to a real t-storm and precipitation that is not frozen.

Have a happy haircut!

That's right. They're all up at the cabin, drinking beer and fishing. :)

What pompous hair salon are you going to?

My wife works at a Salon with a upscale clientele and people have come in looking all sorts of ways(sweat pants, ripped jeans...).

Sometimes the wealthiest are the more eccentric. And the ones with the money don't have to try to impress so hard as ones without.

I went to Dean of Shadyside. And truthfully, there was a good mix of clothing styles there, so I'm wondering if the difference in service I was told about had more to do with time of day, busy-ness, etc.

Cool dreams! I had some wacky ones this morning too, but for a change, no one was trying to kill me.

Hope you like the cut! What kind of salon are you going to for a free haircut where they expect you to look like an executive?
=D

for a change, no one was trying to kill me.

Yay for that!

At this particular salon, when you come in and get a cut, you get a FAVOR card to give to a friend - a free hair cut on someone's first visit. So the girls at school have been passing these coupons around. I have one to give out now, so we'll see who's next.

I had a very hard time getting used to the professional environment. When I went to grad school, my job at the library had no dresscode. I loved it. Since I started off as the courier before moving to desk work, in the summer I could go into work in shorts and a muscle shirt.

When I started at the firm, I wore polo shirts and slacks. As I advanced up the ladder, I realized that I needed to dress better, both for appearances and my own sanity, so I wasn't dressing and feeling like a shlub. Now I'm quite happy to wear a nice dress shirt and tie to work.

I'm just as happy to move away from the ultra-casual clothes of the daycare and into something slightly more refined, just so long as I can transition slowly.

The company where I work instituted a dress code at the beginning of this year. It didn't affect me that much, because I have been following essentially the same dress code since high school -- obviously, it was well drilled into me. (No T-shirts with writing! for example.)

We do actually have a dress-code at the daycare center, but it's sort of along the lines of 'don't let us see your underwear (or personal body parts) and don't wear clothing with obscene or violent images/language'. I got caught one day because the t-shirt I was wearing (the only day all summer that I wore a t-shirt, because I was so backed up on laundry) had a picture of a guy holding a gun on the back, which I didn't realize until my assistant director chided me for it.

I don't really mind getting dressed up. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my jeans, but there's nothing as comfortable as a skirt in the summer, because I HATE shorts. And some of my dress pants feel like pjs.

I'll probably end up wearing skirts this summer, too, because I also hate shorts. I like capris though, so I may wear them as well.
