Nov. 4th, 2004 08:41 amMuch squeeeishness was going on here, last night, as I watched Lost.
Withdrawal!Charlie was every bit as good as I'd hoped. Oh man, that look on his face when he went back to Locke the second time, after Charlie was trapped. He just looked so --I hate to say lost, but that's what it is. He was so determined, in the beginning, to not let the band destroy who he was. And that moment when he gave in was heartbreaking. Sitting there, looking at the drugs that had changed his brother and ruined his dreams, and crying, I wanted to cry for him. And then seeing that same brother all straightened out and living the suburban dream while Charlie still struggled with all his demons seemed just unfair!
Charlie the hero was pretty cool, though. He so desperately wants to be useful, and he's proven over and over again that he's willing to do whatever he's asked to do on the island, but he feels useless. So it was great that he was able to get into that cave and rescue Jack. It gave him a chance to have a little heart to heart with the good doctor. Of course Jack could tell he was in withdrawal and I liked his response to Charlie's insecurity. Between Locke and Jack, I think Charlie is in good hands for the hard days ahead (I have no idea how long the symptoms of physical withdrawal last, but he's not going to be all right in the blink of an eye, even if they don't pursue it in the next few episodes).
Now, on to the the heavy handed chrysalis metaphor. Surely they could have made that a little more subtle? It was a bit on the 'hit us over the head with a hammer' side. It would have been alright if they had just left it at Locke pointing out the chrysalis and explaining why he couldn't help the moth out. But the whole following the moth to the light and digging himself out through the little hole thing just pushed it a bit too far. I'm disappointed in the writers for assuming we're too dumb to get it.
So, who hit Sayid? Will we find out next week? Is someone trying to prevent them from finding the location of the signal? I'm staying away from the conspiracy theories on the board, but I'm sure they have tons to say about this.
I'm very curious about Sawyer's backstory. Kate only sees the chain-smoking asshole side, and has pegged him all wrong. Of course, he doesn't make much effort to correct her. I think he's another person who's in a great deal of pain, but he doesn't want any help dealing with it. I want to know what was in that letter he was reading the first week. He looked so sad.
This is one that I'm going to have to watch again.
I went out with some friends last night and it was an interesting evening. Some of them voted for Bush and some of them had the 'anyone who voted for Bush should be hung' attitude. Things didn't get nasty but I was just waiting for the bomb to go off. According to one guy, armageddon is now unavoidable. Bush will definitely start a nuclear war and that will be the end of us all. It must be fun to live in his world. I'm trying to keep a slightly more positive outlook on the matter. Even Bush can't be that stupid.
I'm not so sure about Cheney, though, saying that Bush now has a mandate from the people to do what he wants in the next four years. Yikes!

Date: 2004-11-04 07:37 am (UTC)I couldn't help it, when the moth showed up to show them the way out of the cave-in I turned to my husband and said "Look! It's Radagast the Moth!" *giggle*
Dom is a magnificent actor! He clearly never got a proper chance to show his range in LotR, (Though I have high hopes for the EE) I would never have tuned into this new show if not for him, but I really like it on its own merits now.
Other cool things: airhead Shannon actually remembered to set off the rocket, and so did Sawyer, although I was *sure* one of them would screw up. The Korean wife telling her husband "It's too hot" when he told her to cover up. (I'm wondering when she's going to tell him in English to "buzz off".)
And I'm wondering how Charlie's jerk brother felt when he heard about the plane going down. Guilt city, I guess, and I hope he has a relapse!
The character whose backstory I'm really intersted in now is Hurley.

Date: 2004-11-04 11:50 am (UTC)I think you're right that Charlie was a good guy before getting caught up in the drugs, but I don't think he stopped being a good guy, just became a bit messed up. Certainly, the entire time they've been on the island, he's been helpful, friendly, and (usually) polite. He just also has a bad habit of taking drugs to get through the day. If what we saw this week is an indication, he may be a bit less nice while going through the withdrawal.

Date: 2004-11-04 11:46 am (UTC)I was really impressed with Shannon that she took the job seriously, stayed by the rocket and remembered to do her job. I wasn't so concerned about Sawyer. I think he really wants to prove, at least to himself, that he isn't a selfish asshole, like everyone assumes he is. It's just difficult for him, because he's so used to acting like a selfish asshole.
Dom really is a wonderful actor. I think he has more range than Lost is providing him as well. Even this week, as he's going through withdrawal, they're using Jack as the drama and Charlie as the comic relief. I'm a bit disappointed by that.
As for the Korean wife, it was only a matter of time before she stood up to that husband of hers. I think we'll be seeing more of that in the future. Their relationship could become much more interesting, as they struggle to redefine who they are in relation to each other, and in relation to the rest of the survivors.

Date: 2004-11-04 11:53 am (UTC)I don't think it was Locke that hit Sayid. I agree with you that it wasn't one of the survivors. Hmmm, a mystery. I like a little mystery. :)
