Maybe you guys can help me out. My mom is trying to find a movie which she only remembers a few details about and I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to search for it.

The details:

There's a woman who is leasing an apartment. She had gone away for a brief time and sublet the apartment to a friend, who let another friend (a man) stay there. The movie opens with the woman returning to the apartment and finding this man living there. He doesn't want to leave because he's applied for a job (possibly in the landscaping field) and this is the address he's given. She doesn't want to give up the apartment because it has this great rooftop that she plans to someday turn into a rooftop garden. Stuff happens which we don't remember. Then, at the end, he's finally getting ready to move out, and before he goes he takes her to the roof and shows her a beautiful garden.

Mom thinks this was within the last three or four years, possibly around the same time as The Notebook. The female lead was a brunette and the male lead was also dark-haired.

Any ideas?

It sounds sorts like Green Card but the details are a bit confused. They get married for convenience but get investigated by INS.

It's definitely not Green Card, although with the rooftop garden thing I can understand why you'd think so.

Hmm. Not actually clear. She might just be in a coma and having an out of body experience... Anyway, when I googled movie and rooftop garden I came up with something pointing me at this one.

This might be it. Mom's unsure but she's going to rent it and see. Certainly a fair number of details seem to match up. Including that Mom mentioned Reese Witherspoon as a possibility (although she also thought the woman was a brunette).

Thanks a bunch! :)

I think Reese Witherspoon usually is a brunette. Could be wrong...

She wasn't in that movie, though I immediately thought of Just Like Heaven as well.

Sounds like a movie I've seen, but it was older than just a few years ago. Can't remember the name though.

Although not all of the details fit exactly, I think it's probably Just Like Heaven. It's close enough that my mom has decided to rent it and see. :)

The movie is "Green Card" with Andie McDowell and Gerard Depardieu. It is probably 10 - 15 years old. You and I probably saw it together in Pgh!

OK. Not Green Card. Sounds like an excuse for mom to watch lots of movies featuring gardens until she finds the right one - or until she forgets which one she was thinking she wanted to see again.

I'm pretty sure Just Like Heaven is the movie she saw, but I think it's likely she's mixing up the details with one or two other movies. She says she's never seen Green Card, but I bet she did and just doesn't remember.

One advantage of having a hazy memory for movies, books and such has to be being able to enjoy the same ones over and over again.
