So, better than last week, if not entirely up to speed. The hunt was a hundred times better, with those creepy changling kids (I loved how positively freaky they were when seen in reflective surfaces). This was a really Dean-centric episode, with Sam sidelined for most of the hour, doggedly researching away, determined to keep looking for a way out, despite Dean's determination to not let Sam risk it.
The kid was a hilarious little mini!Dean. Not terribly realistic for a just-turned-eight-year-old, but cute as cute can be. This reminded me of WIAWSNB, with Dean getting a glimpse of the life he could have had if the Yellow Eyed Demon hadn't come along and screwed everything up. And that look on his face at the end, when he thinks he won't ever be able to have a kid, never get to see one grow up and be a part of his life, at any rate - that was a little heartbreaking.
Blondie (I don't think they officially introduced her as Ruby yet) showed up again and I was all prepared to be up in arms if they Mary Sue'd her again. And then I thought, wow, she's really modeled some of her behaviors after Meg, weird/interesting choice, and then it's all, oh, she's a demon, that explains it all. I like this twist, the idea of factions in hell, demons who are working against the group that was led by old Yellow Eyes, and that Sam's still at the heart of things, even after YED is dead.
Now Sam has a really tough choice to make. I'm assuming he's willing to do just about anything to save Dean, but making an alliance with a Demon, whose motives are bound to be obscure and only tangentially in line with Sam's, and let's not forget probably evil, is really treading a very fine line. Dean will find out about it at some point, no matter how careful Sam is, and he's not going to like it. Not at all. Which could lead either to some delicious conflict between the boys embuing some really good tension into the storyline if it's done right. Or it could just get really old, really fast, much like Dean's 'hey I'm gonna die in a year, you have to feel sorry for me and give me anything I want' attitude.
Technically speaking (something I almost never have an opinion on), I felt a lot of the cuts, especially in the fight sequence, were godawful choppy. Angles and actions didn't seem to line up right, somehow, making it harder to follow the action and figure out who was doing what. Sam reached in the direction of his bag and in the next frame had the flame-thrower out and aimed, as one example. It was jarring and bothered me as I was watching it.
All in all, much lighter than last week's ep, less focus on the coming war and more emphasis on the fact that they still have a job to do, Dean's still a boyslut, Sam's still an ubergeek, nothing to get excited about. I liked that - not every episode can or should be crucial in the big arc.
Next week's episode looks good. I'm used to downloading or getting dvds with this show, after all the eps of a particular season are aired, so this whole having to wait a week between episodes thing is hard to do. *pouts*
It would be nice if this week would end sometime soon. To that end, I'm going to take some Nyquil, crawl into bed and not-sleep for several hours. If you read the label on that stuff, it says 'may cause excitability, especially in small children.' Well, I may not be a small child, but the stuff definitely keeps me awake at night.

Literally half my LJ friends are sick this week...
Nyquil is not exactly the greatest formulation in the world. The high % of alcohol isn't helpful. It helps you sleep, but it also impairs the quality of your sleep.
If you need any recommendations, don't hesitate to ask your friendly LJ pharmacist...
Get better soon my friend.
