[livejournal.com profile] birch_tree asked for a Quest Merry and Pippin drabble and I actually managed to get it into drabble form this time.

On the River

During the long days on the river, they spoke but rarely to one another. Most of their communication was with their eyes. They followed Boromir’s restless movements carefully, and then met each other’s glances. There was no need for speech. Their friend was troubled and judging by his intent stares at Frodo, it wasn’t difficult to guess what was on his mind. At their nightly camps, they moved a little away from the others and planned. They would continue to watch and they would be ready to act if Boromir did more than stare at Frodo and chew his fingernails.

I don't know what to say about this other than that I love it.

I mean, if I quoted you the part I liked most, you'd get the entire drabble. ♥

Very nice! I know that as fond of Boromir as they were, they had to have known what his attitude implied, and they would have prepared for it.

Yes, I think the Ring lust would have been obvious to those two, especially, as they spent all that time with him on the river, watching him watch Frodo.

I'm glad you liked it. :)

I like the speaking to one another with looks bit. You have to know someone very well to do that and those two would be well-practiced at it. As always, I love that they are watching out for Frodo.

Thanks. Yes, I can see those two having whole conversations with the tilt of an eyebrow and a quirk of the lip.

Thank you very much!!!!
It is exactly what I was hoping for: Merry and Pippin, their understanding of each other and their quiet understanding of the situations...
I am glad I asked for it! :))))

I debated long and hard whether this was good enough to post, as I'm never very comfortable with my drabbles, so I'm very glad you like it. :)

I like the way you've got them planning for action without a lot of discussion -- and not denying that Boromir might need watching too!

Thank you!

I think that Merry and Pippin loved Boromir, but they weren't stupid and they could see the Ring lust creeping up on him as they traveled the river. Thanks for picking that up. :)

I love how Merry and Pippin were always watching, planning, and communicating in their own way. No matter what, they were there to help Frodo whatever way they could.

That's what I love so much about Merry and Pippin, their determination to help in whatever way they can, and their refusal to be denied. :)

This is terrific! I so admire your ability to put so much into so few words. I still say I couldn't write a drabble if my life depended on it. You do it so well! Bravo!

Well, I can only sometimes do it. The four page story I wrote for Dreamflower's holiday story was supposed to be a drabble too, lol. I'm glad you liked this one. :)

This is so lovely. I love how you show that Frodo was their first priority. It says so much about their courage and loyalty that they were always looking for ways to protect him, and didn't even hesitate when it meant they might have to defend him against one of their own friends.

I would really love a drabble too, if it wouldn't be too much of a bother! A Pippin and Aragorn Quest drabble would be wonderful, and please let me know if I can write one for you in return! :)

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I have you marked down for a Pippin and Aragorn Quest drabble. I don't have any specific requests, but if you would like to write something Merry, that would be nice. :)

Oh, this is wonderful--perfect drabbleness, with a few words conveying a lot of meaning. (Just like Merry and Pippin's silent conversations, I suppose.) :-)
