Once again I'm a little worried about my cats. Tookie and Thor aren't eating much, which means Mal is eating everything in sight and turning into a fat little cat. I'm not pleased. I want to the older, skinny kids to eat more and Mal to eat less but I don't know exactly how to accomplish any of that. Part of Tookie's problem is simply that I've almost run out of meds for her and haven't been able to refill the prescription yet, so she's on half doses at the moment, to make the meds last longer. I think Thor's problem is that he's coming up to the time of month when he needs his meds and he always gets a little poorly right around then. But I can't just stop putting food out for them, and yet, when I do, Mal eats it all. And he really is starting to get a little plump.

Any suggestions?

I asked my friend this question, since I have one cat who is, well, not picky, but he won't eat himself plump, and another who will eat anything in sight, lol. The friend, who is a vet-tech, told me to feed them in different locations. Have your older cats eat in one room and the little one in another, and don't let the little one into the room with the older cats until they are done.
Hope that helps!

Thanks. This is what I did when Mal was a baby and I was worried that the older kids would eat all his food, but unfortunately, the only room in the apartment that has a door is the tiny little bathroom. I thought about locking him up in there while the older cats eat, but the drawback to that is that they are poky eaters. Tookie will nibble a tiny bit and then come back to it later - I'd have to keep Mal locked up in what isn't much more than a closet for a couple of hours twice a day.

There probably isn't going to be a good solution to this problem.

I agree that the seperate feeding is your best bet - I'm sure Mal won't like it but maybe he can work off a little of that weight running around in the bathroom waiting to get out?

(poor attempt at humor, sorry - chai is still kicking in)

good luck!

The problem is, when I say a bathroom the size of a closet, I'm talking small closet - I can reach the sink and the tub from the toilet - and because of the nibbling behavior of the old cats (they both have bad teeth and eat slowly, walking away and returning often over the course of several hours) Mal would be in that really small bathroom for close to four hours a day. Not a good idea.

I've decided to only put out a little bit of food in the morning, since the older kids aren't eating as much, and then, if they seem hungry in the evenings, try giving them extra then, when I'm home and can keep Mal out of the kitchen more easily,
