Title: The Scent of Failure
Fandom: Supernatural
Rating: G
Word count: 150
Spoilers: the pilot episode
Prompt:
eve11 requested Sam and Dean, "Well, that could have gone better."
Disclaimer: Nothing belongs to me, I make no profit.
A/N: This was going to be a 5 Things type fic, but I realized if I was ever going to post anything, it would have to be a stand-alone. Maybe the other four things will come along someday.
Sam had finally crashed, sprawled out on top of the bedspread, still mostly dressed, faint tear tracks catching the light from passing headlights. Dean scrubbed a hand over his face and grimaced at the smell of smoke lingering on his skin. In a minute he’d get up and take a shower, try to wash away the bitter scent of failure. But for now, he just sat in the uncomfortably overstuffed chair and watched over his grief-stunned brother’s sleep.
He’d gone to Stanford in the confidence that once he had Sam back on the road he’d be able to keep him there, break the lure of ‘safe’ and ‘normal,’ convince him that this is where he belonged. They’d find Dad and be a family, be whole again. Only, here Sam was and Dean wondered if he’d ever be whole again. Yeah, not exactly how he’d planned for this to go.
