"Here," said the tree, "let me make your day more interesting." *drops v. large branch on playground* "Ah," said the tree. "I feel so much lighter now."

Seriously, that was possibly the scariest moment I've had at work, ever. Luckily, it was late enough in the afternoon that we only had six or seven kids out on that playground (as opposed to the twenty-five or thirty we have sometimes). Even more luckily, none of them happened to be playing on the dirt terraces in the back corner of the playground. This is a favorite spot because it's cool and shady most of the afternoon, there's all sorts of ants and other bugs to look at, there's dirt to dig in, there's the wooden walls of the terracing to walk on like a balance beam, etc., but just at that moment, the few kids left were otherwise occupied. I had just started to do a count of my kids when there was a large craaaaacccckkkkk! sound. I looked up just in time to see a pretty large branch break away from the trunk of the tree. What I couldn't see, because there was a large climber between me and the area, was if there were any kids over there. I completely froze for a second, unable to believe what I'd just seen, then ran over to the area to be sure the lack of screams meant no one was hurt. And then, just like that, all the excitement was over. Finished taking the head count, told the few remaining parents (the kids were pretty excited by it, so all the parents were going to hear some version - probably best to get an official one), and came home. Never a dull moment at CHCC.

Now it just remains to be seen how long it takes the Parks and Recreation people to come clean up.

You really never can trust those trees. They do seem prone to shedding limbs nearly as easily as dogs and cats lose fur! I'm glad none of the children were in sufficiently close proximity to learn this unfortunate arborial lesson by being clobbered by the falling branch!

*Wishes you a very calm evening (with the exception of the excitement of the Pens' win!*

Not gonna be *calm* per se - I don't think calm is possibly considering the game being played, but certainly one can hope there is less danger involved, lol.

Wow. Yay for that tree waiting until no one was underneath.

It did, indeed, have good timing.
