I kind of thought maybe I would spend a little time today looking for a job. And, well, I did spend a little time on it, just now. Sent off my resume to a job that could potentially be pretty awesome. I don't know if the position is still open, and my skill set only partially overlaps with what they want, but I'm getting better at this idea that it's okay to apply for jobs even when the chances of them even looking at your resume are slim to none. Now, to just keep looking. That's the part I really suck at.

ETA: And there goes another one, this time winging it's way off to NJ. Wow, I keep this up, I may eventually find a job.

I don't know why this is such a hard thing to do - fighting against the inertia of already having a job, however lacking in some areas it is.

I have tripled the amount of jobs I've applied for, in one fell swoop. Which really points out how apathetic I've been for the past year.

Congratulations on getting two applications sent off! Keep up the good work - it will eventually lead to a job!

I mentioned your job search to a woman from LCBM who works in UM's library (networking is all about having people you know discuss you with people they after all). She gave the following advice (for what it's worth):

1. Pitt's school is well-respected. You have a solid degree and should be confident about your knowledge. Make sure that comes through in your cover letters/resume.

2. Don't feel that you can only apply for archivist jobs - your experience in child care would make you an attractive candidate for school library and/or public library jobs where an ability to manage young children's behavior is a BIG PLUS.

3. Any additional archives/library experience you can get while you are job-hunting is important and should be emphasized in your cover letters & resumes. Of course, this is difficult while you have a fulltime job, but if there is any part time volunteer work you can do - or if you are doing anything at CH that is archive/library related - do it and play it up in the materials you send out! The "play up your experience" advice also applies to your internship at the History museum.

Good luck!

These are all good things to consider. I'm definitely also looking at library jobs. One of the jobs I sent out yesterday was for a children's librarian position. The volunteering is bothering me a little because I'm just done by 6:00 Friday evening and Saturday I don't feel like getting up in the morning to go off and do something. I suppose I should talk to a woman in the building here, who has some archival records that haven't been looked at.

Yeah, I knew the bit about volunteering would bother you (notice how I cleverly hid it at the end of the message!) and I certainly understand why it does. But, if you could manage to get paid for doing something that would add to your archivist/LIS experience as part of your current job - that could be a good thing. Anyway - keep up the good work!

I need to get much, much better at looking for jobs too. When I first start I can send something off, but I haven't looked in a long time.

Good luck though. I hope something comes through that you wand. :D

Thanks for the good wishes, and I send them right back to you. It does seem, for me at least, that the hardest part is just making myself look at the job listings regularly, and then actually acting on the good jobs in a timely fashion.

I wouldn't be too bothered if your skills don't completely fit the skills asked for. I think it only rarely happens that somebody fits the job description a 100%. And even then it may not be the right person for the job anyway, because (s)he doesn't fit in with the others, for instance. If you come over as eager and willing to learn and enthusiastic, you still have a chance to land a job. (My husband is currently at his 2nd job since graduating, and in both cases he did only have part of the skills asked for, but because of other traits, he got the jobs anyway.)

I had a conversation with someone at work that was almost word for word what you said. I'll try to remember that as I'm looking at all these job descriptions that I just don't feel I measure up to.
